Dorothy Wandling

Dorothy E. Wandling, 90, of Waukon died Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. A private family graveside service was held at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon with Pastor Bryan Robertson officiating. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon handled arrangements.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials can be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 403, Waukon, IA, 52172, where she had been an active member for 60 years.

Dorothy E. Danker Wandling was born August 6, 1929 in Poweshiek County, near Belle Plaine, the daughter of Bernard and Helene (Heitmann) Danker. She attended country school and Lutheran parochial school. In April 1943, Dorothy was confirmed. She graduated from Keystone High School in May of 1947.

February 22, 1948, Dorothy married Roy Wandling, son of Ruth and Albert Wandling, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Keystone. In 1960, they moved to Waukon, where she worked at the Ben Franklin store, Regan’s Pharmacy and Hartig Drug.

An amazing seamstress, Dorothy made clothes for many people in Waukon, including for some of her children’s weddings. She was also a great cook and her family thought she made the best potato salad, party mix, chocolate chip cookies, mint brownies and apple pie. She enjoyed playing cards, puzzles, and visiting with her family and friends.

She is survived by her children: Thomas (Toni) Wandling, Cynthia (Loren) Fiet, Carol (Tom) Wittenberg, Gene (Tamara) Wandling and Alan Wandling; her grandchildren: Jesse, Brodie, Denise, Cathie, Amy, Ann, Nicholas, Ryan, Kasey, Rachel, Bryce, Paige and Britney; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy, in 2014; a granddaughter, Lacey; one sister, Frances Danker; and three brothers, Kenneth, John and Al Danker.
