Indians will open Class 2A State Play-Offs hosting West Liberty this Friday

by Perry Hesse

The Waukon football team completed a perfect 5-0 Class 2A District 4 season Friday, October 15 and a 7-1 regular season record with a 59-28 victory over Union, LaPorte City. The win wrapped up a fourth consecutive undefeated District Championship season for the Indians and allows them to host their first-round play-off game this Friday, October 22, with 3-5 West Liberty traveling to Waukon. That match-up was set with Waukon earning a top seed while the Comets were the fourth-place team in Class 2A District 5.

Waukon seems to be rolling offensively entering the play-offs, racking up another 565 yards of offense Friday night including 202 yards through the air and another 363 yards via the ground game. All of this despite several penalties handicapping the offense.

“The penalties are frustrating, largely because we will eventually turn into a team that we can’t count on always breaking a big play for a first down or touchdown,” said Waukon football head coach Chad Beermann, not entirely pleased with the victory. “Some of the false starts were caused by our opponent yelling when we went in motion. We have to be more disciplined and know when to avoid a block in the back. I love the aggressiveness, but at some point we have to know not to try a block.”

Much like what is scheduled for this Friday, Waukon hosted West Liberty in the 2019 quarterfinals - a 32-12 Indian victory knotted at 12-12 at halftime, and Beermann said they are a foe to be respected: “Last year, they knocked Williamsburg out of the play-offs. They have an outstanding running back and their kids always play hard. They finished fourth in their district this year but beat their district champion in Monticello.”

Kick-off in Waukon this Friday will be at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the second round of the Class 2A State Play-Offs the following Friday, October 29.
