Waukon football team plays to 6-4 season record, fifth consecutive undefeated District championship during 2022 campaign led by nearly two dozen seniors

The 2022 Waukon football season rode a bit of a rollercoaster during this most recent fall campaign that ended up at a 6-4 season record, and just like any such ride that ultimately comes to an end too soon, there were plenty of thrills provided along the way. That end came short of a sixth consecutive trip to every team’s ultimate destination of playing in the UNI-Dome at season’s end, but before that conclusion the grid Tribe played its way to a fifth consecutive undefeated Class 2A District Championship and extended a qualifying streak for the Class 2A State Play-Offs to a sixth consecutive season as well.

The start of this 2022 campaign didn’t provide a great deal of evidence that either of those championship or qualifying streaks might continue, as the Indians got their season off to a 0-3 start in non-district play, the Tribe’s first winless start of that length since a 2011 campaign that ended up at 2-7 on the year. The first two of those losses came to larger schools who also played their way to State Play-Off qualification, with the third coming to a Crestwood team, by a 44-20 result, that ultimately ended up bringing the Indians’ season to a close in a play-off match-up that proved to be a much closer battle, 20-18, than that original non-district loss, despite the Indians playing with a squad depleted by injury at that point in the season.

“For whatever reason, the team did not gel early,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann analyzed. “It was a surprise, due to the large number of returning players we had. We will have to weigh our approach to the start of the season, and even the summer, to see if we can get everyone on the same page earlier.”

Having wrapped up that winless non-district schedule, adjustments were made and the rollercoaster season began its ascent to the eventual top of Class 2A District 5 to claim that fifth consecutive undefeated district title on the way to a six-game win streak. That streak was forged despite the Indians facing the two teams many thought would be this season’s district title top contenders within their first three games in league play.
