Waukon girls basketball team has season ended with 56-43 second-round Class 3A Region 7 loss at 10th-rated Osage

Pair of long distance dialings ... Waukon girls basketball senior Jayden Knox launches a three-point missile in the Indians’ 56-43 loss at 10th-rated Osage in Class 3A Regional Tournament play Wednesday, February 15. Knox buried a couple of these distance daggers in the second quarter to help the Tribe build as much as a 30-17 lead, and she ended the game with six points. For the first half of play in its Wednesday, February 15 Class 3A Region 7 semifinals match-up at 10th-rated Osage, the Waukon girls basketball team provided a sense of deja vu for the Green Devils stemming back to two seasons ago when the Lady Indians shocked then sixth-rated Osage with a 60-37 upset to make their way to the State Tournament. The second half of play, however, saw the Green Devils snap themselves back to reality and pour in a 33-13 outscoring of the bucket Tribe - including a 17-4 fourth quarter runaway - to pay back that season-ending result with a 56-43 Waukon defeat.

The loss ends Waukon’s season with a 14-9 overall record that includes a mark of 6-4 in Northeast Iowa Conference play that placed them third in the final Northeast Iowa Conference standings behind Decorah and Waverly-Shell Rock. With the win, 10th-rated Osage took its 21-2 season record to Dubuque Saturday, February 18 to face ninth-rated Wahlert, a team coached by 1978 Waukon High School graduate Kris Spiegler. Osage had its season brought to a close with a 57-35 loss to the Golden Eagles, who Spiegler has now coached to the State Tournament for the fifth time in her tenure at the Wahlert helm.

Spiegler’s Wahlert team will open the Class 3A State Tournament Monday, February 27 at 8:30 p.m. against Solon. That Solon team has further Waukon connection, as junior guard Anna Quillin is the daughter of Waukon High School graduates Jason (1990) and Melissa (Sorum-1991) Quillin, and the granddaughter of Dave and Mary Lou Sorum and Kevin and Ann Quillin, all of Waukon. Spartan junior forward Hailey Miller is also the granddaughter of Harpers Ferry native Rich Meehan, a graduate of St. George High School in Lansing.
