Wayne Martin

Wayne N. Martin, 85, of Waukon died Saturday, March 4, 2023 at his daughter’s home in Stoddard, WI. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 11 from 1-4 p.m. at Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon.

Wayne Neal Martin was born March 14, 1937 in Waukon, the son of James and Hazel (Rongstad) Martin. He attended country schools in the Waukon area, graduated from Waukon High School in 1956, and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette on a football scholarship.

November 29, 1956, he married Elaine Jean Easley at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Wayne worked for Charlie Feuerhelm for a couple of years then worked at Hygrade in Postville for 20 years; after working for Interstate Power in Lansing for 20 years, he retired in 1999. After retiring, he mowed the fairways at the Waukon Golf and Country Club for about 10 years.

Wayne was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, the Waukon Golf and Country Club, and volunteered at the Allamakee County Food Shelf. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, hunting, fishing and playing softball. Wayne also enjoyed going for coffee around town at the S & D Cafe, Cynda’s Westside Cafe and Hardees. He also loved to travel on his motorcycle throughout the United States with his Waukon area riding group.

Survivors include his children, Julie (Dean) Penkalski of Stoddard, WI and Russ Martin of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Chase and Samantha Penkalski; three brothers: Charlie Martin and Earl Martin, both of Waukon, and Dennis (Deanna) Martin of Albany, LA; three sisters: Joyce Sickels of Cedar Rapids, and Norma (Cletus) Fish and Doris Martin, both of Waukon; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Kay Martin of Waukon and Sandy Stuefen of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elaine, in 2022; a brother, Harlan Martin; and two brothers-in-law, Myron ‘Pug” Stuefen and Oakley Sickels.
