Waukon baseball team opens season with 7-6 home loss to Kee

Diving double play ... Waukon baseball junior Gabe Weighner cradles the ball in his glove as he hits the ground after diving after and snagging a popped-up bunt attempt in the second inning of the Indians’ 7-6 home loss to Kee Thursday, May 18. After catching the ball for an out, Weighner snapped a throw to first base to double-off a Hawk baserunner to complete the double play and end the inning, and he also knocked around a pair of singles in three at-bats to score two runs while pitching four and two-thirds innings to strike out three batters. The Waukon baseball team got its 2023 season underway against a nearby foe, playing host to fellow Allamakee County school Kee Thursday, May 18 in an early-season non-conference match-up. With several of their returning starters and/or most veteran players not available for the game due to competing at the State Track Meet, the depleted Indian squad battled an overall young Kee crew that had to replace nearly all its starters from last season to just a one-run final margin that came down to the final play of the game before deciding the 7-6 Waukon defeat.

The Indians were next scheduled to play at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, May 23 before hosting Starmont Wednesday, May 24 and then playing at Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday May 25. Another three-date schedule next week has the diamond Tribe hosting varsity doubleheaders against Decorah Tuesday, May 30, Sumner-Fredericksburg Thursday, June 1 and Charles City Friday, June 2.
