Waukon boys track team claims trio of event medals among Class 2A at State Track Meet; Distance medley places sixth


Anchors pair of medal-winning relays ... Waukon boys track junior Wyatt Gulla crosses the finish line after anchoring the Indians’ distance medley relay to a sixth-place finish among the Class 2A elite at the State Track Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Friday, May 19. Gulla teamed up with senior James VanderVelden, junior Brody Berns and sophomore Judah Johnson for that sixth-place medley finish in a time of 3:37.40 for one medal-winning anchor finish, and he also anchored the track Tribe’s 4x800 relay to another medal-winning effort of eighth place, joining forces with fellow junior Jack O’Neill and seniors Nate Keenan and Nathan O’Neill to finish eighth in a time of 8:12.43. Gulla also ran the anchor leg of the Indians’ 4x400 relay that finished 14th with a clocking of 3:29.96, teaming up with VanderVelden, Berns and senior Josh Keenan for that relay effort. The 2023 season came to a close for the Waukon boys track and field team at the location where every high school track and field athlete wants to be, as the Indians competed among Class 2A’s elite at the Iowa High School Track and Field Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Thursday through Saturday, May 18-20. The Indians qualified seven events for this spring’s season grand finale, including four individual efforts and a trio of relays, bringing home State Meet medals in three of those events with top-eight finishes among their Class 2A  competition peers.
