Waukon baseball team sweeps road pair from Decorah during six-game week

Record-breaking recognition ... In between the two games of the Waukon baseball team’s home doubleheader with New Hampton Tuesday, June 20, Waukon baseball senior catcher Carter Schellsmidt is pictured above shaking hands with his father, Waukon baseball head coach Shane Schellsmidt, during a brief ceremony where he received the game ball recognizing his breaking of the Waukon baseball program’s all-time record for hits in a career with a two-out, two-run double in the second inning of a game-two 4-1 home win over Waverly-Shell Rock the previous Friday, June 16. That hit was the 141st bingo of the younger Schellsmidt’s five-year varsity career with the Indians, surpassing the previous program standard of 140 hits recorded during the career of 1996 Waukon High School graduate Brian Curtin. The Waukon baseball team saved its best for last this past week, ending an early-week losing streak of four games with a final doubleheader sweep. That week began with home losses of 13-1 in five innings and 3-2 to Class 2A ninth-rated New Hampton Tuesday, June 20 before the diamond Tribe had a pair of games get away in the late innings Thursday, June 22 for losses of 8-4 and 6-5 in 10 innings at Oelwein. The Indians bounced back from that series of losses to payback a doubleheader sweep of Decorah with a sweep of two games on the road Friday, June 23 by scores of 13-9 and 7-3.

Now holding an even 15-15 season record that includes a mark of 8-10 in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play, the Indians were next scheduled to wrap up their regular season schedule with a NEIC doubleheader at Charles City Monday, June 26 before playing at MFL/MarMac Wednesday, June 28. They are then scheduled to begin Class 2A District Tournament play Wednesday, July 5 at New Hampton.
