Gregory Lee Steffans, 65, of Somerset, KY passed away Monday, October 9, 2023 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. A Celebration of Life Gathering was held Saturday, October 14 at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Postville. A Graveside Service was held Sunday, October 15 at God’s Acres in Clermont with Pastor Karla Johnson serving as the officiant.

Gregory was born December 20, 1957 to Donald and Wilma (Quandahl) Steffans in Decorah. He graduated from Valley High School in 1976.

In the early years, Greg worked a variety of jobs before going to work for Waukon Harley-Davidson, where he worked for 14 years. In 2000, Greg moved to Somerset, KY where he started his dream job. He built racing engines for Cornett Engines “Home of the Red Valve Covers” and continued working there until May of 2023, when he was no longer able to turn the wrenches. He enjoyed watching NHRA Drag Racing, Dirt Late Models, NTPA and attending events when he was able.

Greg always looked forward to coming home to Iowa on the fourth of July week and Christmas time to spend time with family and friends. A couple quirks of Greg’s were, asking if the kids wanted “a chicken sandwich” or a “chicken deluxe butt buster”. He also liked to attend high school basketball games to heckle the refs and call them “zebra boys”.

Surviving Greg are his mother, Wilma Steffans of Postville; his sister, Ruth (Loren Eberling) Larson of Postville; his brother, Richard (Nikki) Steffans of Postville; his niece, Melissa (Chad) Moeller of Monona; his nephews, Marty Larson, Mike (April) Steffans, Cody Steffans, Zach (Becky) Steffans, Mitchell (Danielle) Steffans, Jacob (special friend Nayeli Vega) Steffans, and Isaac (special friend Tessa Halverson) Steffans; his numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; all the guys and gals from Cornett Racing Engines; Holley the cat; and special friends, Steve and Marie Christianson.

Greg was preceded in death by his father, Donald Steffans, in 2007; three brothers, Gary in infancy, Roger in 2006 and Donald “Dean” in 2023; and a sister-in-law, Karla in 2009.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville assisted the family with arrangements and services.
