Becky Drees Memorial Foundation makes ‘Tummy Time Mirror’ donation to VMH Clinics in Waukon and in Postville

Becky Drees Memorial Foundation donates to VMH ... Family members of Becky Drees, on behalf of the Becky Drees Memorial Foundation, recently donated ‘Tummy Time Mirrors’ to the Veterans Memorial Hospital Clinics in Postville and Waukon. These mirrors are designed for babies to lay on their tummies and hold their heads up to look at themselves in the mirror, which in turn encourages gross motor (large muscle) development. The mirrors will be given out to all newborns at their first well-baby check at either the Waukon or Postville clinic. Pictured above, left to right, are Ann Hagensick, who is the local coordinator of this project, along with Nancy Drees, mother of Becky Drees, and Katy Maker, Nurse Midwife. Submitted photo.

Tummy time like this has proven to provide for better strength and coordination of the baby’s hands, arms and shoulders for playing with toys, and it also gives a visual stimulation for the babies.

These mirrors will be given to all babies who are seen in either the Waukon or Postville clinics for their first well-baby check. Veterans Memorial Hospital and Clinics in Waukon and Postville are the first recipients of these mirrors in northeast Iowa. The first mirror donations were made to the hospitals in Dubuque and Manchester in 2021. Since that time, the Becky Drees Foundation has delivered a total of 2,300 mirrors to those three hospitals. Now Veterans Memorial Hospital has been added to that recipient list.

The Becky Drees Foundation was formed in memory of Rebecca “Becky” Drees, who passed at the age of 22 as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Becky was full of life and was a very giving person, always quick to offer help and support to anyone who needed it. Plus, she was an organ donor. To commemorate her spirit and giving nature, her family and friends carry on her legacy through the Becky Drees Memorial Foundation.

Becky’s mom, Nancy, is a retired occupational therapist, who knew the best way to promote gross motor skills is for a baby to spend time on their tummy from birth. For this reason, they chose to provide tummy time mirrors to make a positive and lasting influence on babies and their development.

Keystone Area Education Agency provides educational materials for the parents to accompany the mirrors.
