Waukon football team stuffs New Hampton’s two-point conversion run in overtime to clinch a 28-27 road triumph and Tribe’s sixth consecutive district championship

Indians will open Class 2A State Play-Offs at home this Friday against Union

“Deja vu while going for two!”

That could very well be the final battle cry of the Waukon football team’s 28-27 overtime triumph in its 2023 regular season finale played at New Hampton Friday, October 13, as for the second straight season the Indian defense stopped the Chickasaws short of their ultimate goal on their final offensive play in consecutive games with strong play-off implications. That latest feat came on this past Friday’s final play of the game, a two-point conversion run in overtime by New Hampton workhorse senior Braden McShane that was stuffed short of not only deciding the ballgame in the Chickasaws’ favor but also this season’s Class 2A District 3 champion, the Indians now owning their sixth consecutive district crown.

STATE PLAY-OFFS BEGIN AT HOME THIS FRIDAY VS. UNION
With the clinching of their sixth consecutive district championship, the football Indians will now open the Class 2A State Play-Offs at home for the sixth consecutive season, playing in the Class 2A State Play-Offs for the 10th time in the past 12 seasons and for the seventh consecutive year. Friday’s first-round opponent will be the Knights of Union, La Porte City, the fourth-place team out of Class 2A District 6 that enters the State Play-Offs with a 2-6 season record that includes a 0-6 start but victories in the Knights’ last two ballgames, a 38-8 home win over a winless Vinton-Shellsburg squad two weeks ago and a 14-6 road win over a West Marshall team that finished third in District 6 over Union with the same 2-6 overall, 2-3 district records but by virtue of less than a two-point final point differential.
