Focus on the Future continues for spring 2024 Iowa Nutrient Research Center seminar series
A new Iowa Nutrient Research Center seminar series for spring 2024 continues its Focus on the Future with current and recent graduate students discussing studies they are involved in and some of their experiences as early career researchers.
Each session will present two speakers and topics. The monthly hybrid presentations will take place Wednesdays, February 14, March 6, April 10 and May 8, from 3:10-4 p.m. The hybrid seminar series will be presented online and in-person at 1306 Elings Hall, 605 Bissell Road, on the Iowa State University campus.
“The success of the projects INRC funds often depends on dedicated graduate students. We appreciate the value of their work and consider educating the next generation of scientists an important part of university research,” said Kay Stefanik, assistant director of the Iowa Nutrient Research Center at Iowa State University. “We featured the work of early career researchers through the fall, and it worked so well, we decided to continue this approach through the spring semester.”
All presenters are graduate students at Iowa State unless otherwise indicated.
February 14:

March 6:

- Reducing phosphorus export in farmed potholes using blind inlets with steel media - Presenter: Adam Buseman, Water quality project manager, King County, Washington
April 10:
- Improving understanding of “corn yield drag” after cereal rye cover crop by tracking soil net nitrogen mineralization across three hillslope positions - Presenter: Mila Vicorio Pessoto, Department of Agronomy
- Spatiotemporal variability of soil and digital soil mapping for agriculture - Presenter, Arturo Flores Godoy, Department of Agronomy
May 8:
- Of water and wildlife: evaluating potential wildlife responses to working land water conservation paradigms in Iowa - Presenter: Michael Rohde, Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management
- Managing crop residue to reduce AONR and increase water quality - Presenter: Alexandria Logan, Department of Agronomy.
