The Music Department in the Waukon High School and Middle School will be hosting its 15th annual Pop’s Concert Friday, February 23 at the Waukon Middle School gymnasium. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with concert time at 7 p.m.

The Pop’s Concert is an annual fundraising event sponsored by the Allamakee Music Boosters, and it features high energy musical numbers from the 1950s through today. Groups performing will include the Waukon High School and Middle School choirs, high school and middle school jazz bands, drumline, middle school rock band, featured soloists, song and dance skits, and emcees. The Pop’s Concert continues to feature new musical talents each year and has become a must-see event for the Waukon community.

“It’s pretty amazing that we have been having our annual Pop’s Concert for 15 years now,” states JoAnn Sherman, Waukon High School Band Director. “It just seems like yesterday that we started this performance platform. The students and the community have supported this endeavor since the beginning. I love seeing the community’s creativity with the table decorations. Our students truly love preparing and performing for this concert each year.”

“The middle school and high school vocal music department students are again heavily involved in the Pop’s Concert,” states Sarah Bieber, Waukon Vocal Music Director. “I am incredibly proud of their dedication to their craft, and I look forward to showcasing their variety of musical talents at the concert. We have students playing piano solos, singing and accompanying themselves on guitars, performing their own twists on musical theatre skits, and there are even students who are second- and third-time Pop’s Concert featured vocal soloists. These students are up there doing what they love. I encourage any adult, teenager, or child to attend this event. You will walk away in awe of these kids sharing their musical talents.”

Tim Lund, Waukon Middle School Band Director, states, “I’m so proud of the commitment and hard work that these middle schoolers have shown in preparing for this concert. It is so rewarding to watch as they grow and mature in their playing over the course of the year. They are excited to perform for you!”

The Pop’s Concert is open to the public for general admission seating in the bleachers and chairs located in the gym. No school activity passes or booster club passes will be accepted. Tables, which can seat up to ten people, can be sponsored. Table sponsors can decorate their tables, provide snacks/desserts to their guests, and invite family and friends to join in on the memorable night. To reserve a table, contact Brenda Dougherty at 563-568-7997 to leave a message, or email acsdmusicboosters@gmail.com.

The money raised from this event has been allocated in the past by the Allamakee Music Boosters to help purchase items such as drumline equipment, risers, pianos, and various pieces of equipment for all grades, as well as provide scholarships for students to attend music camps. A Tastefully Simple Bakeless Bake Sale will be going on at the concert as well with numerous items offered. In case of inclement weather Friday, February 23, the back-up date for the Pop’s Concert performance has been set for Saturday, February 24 at 7 p.m.
