The Waukon boys golf team will bring back half a dozen players with varsity letterwinning experience from a squad that turned in a winning record of 6-4 in dual meet competition last season. Those six varsity veterans include representation from each eligible grade level, including a trio of seniors, one junior and a pair of sophomores.
“I am looking for consistency in their scores this year,” Waukon boys golf coach Tharin Benson said of his returning varsity leaders. “I am looking for leadership at practice, and a willingness to dedicate time to short-game fundamentals. Also, course management decisions should be improved.”
The senior trio of Dylan Hogan, Cashton Lloyd and Drew Weymiller is joined by junior Dalton Ellickson and the sophomore pair of Reid Deeney and Dylan Stegen in providing that returning veteran leadership, with Hogan bringing back multiple years at that leadership level and Stegen being an All-Conference player last season in just his first high school campaign on the links. The remainder of this season’s crew will be heavily young and will include a pair of seniors, one junior, eight sophomores and a new class of six freshmen.
The Indians were scheduled to get their 2024 campaign underway Tuesday, April 2 with a home match against Decorah and North Fayette Valley before they play at Crestwood Monday, April 8 and then return home to host MFL/MarMac and Postville Tuesday, April 9. They will then play at Clayton Ridge Thursday, April 11.
