Waukon football team takes control from the start for first win of the season in district play, 68-8 at home over Oelwein

By ground and by air for a touchdown pair ... Waukon football junior Owen Grimstad leaves an Oelwein defender on the ground on this five-yard pass he took in for a first quarter touchdown in the Indians’ 68-8 home win over the Huskies Friday, October 4. In addition to that lone pass reception, Grimstad also added 38 yards and another touchdown on five rushing attempts while wrapping up two solo tackles in the Indian victory. In looking ahead to his team’s Class 2A District 3 home battle with Oelwein a week earlier, Waukon football head coach Chad Beermann had said his team will “need to stick together, execute well, and overcome our own injuries.” Once they took the field Friday, October 4 against the visiting Huskies, one could say the grid Tribe did all of those things in dominating from start to finish on the way to a 68-8 win that gave the Indians their first Class 2A District 3 victory of this season while keeping an Oelwein team depleted by injury and low participation numbers in search of its first win at all for this fall campaign.

The Indian edge in the contest was further evident in their 502 yards of total offense that included a season-best 343 yards rushing where five of the six Indians who carried the ball scored at least one touchdown. The additional 159 yards that came through the air were accumulated on 10 pass completions in 12 attempts, with three of those catches also going for touchdowns as the grid Tribe put its most points on the scoreboard this season - and since an October 1, 2021 home win over Dubuque Wahlert by a 64-21 final tally, winning by the team’s widest margin of victory since an October 18, 2019 home win over Anamosa by a 66-0 final margin.

Now holding a 2-4 season record overall, that mark includes a 1-2 result in the Tribe’s Class 2A District 3 schedule. The Indians are next scheduled to play at Osage this Friday, October 11. The Green Devils are an even 3-3 on the season, including a 2-1 record in Class 2A District 3 after starting to recover from some early-season injury absences and pulling off a 20-10 win this past Friday at Crestwood, a team that had defeated the grid Tribe by a 32-16 margin a week earlier.
