Waukon football team falls victim to speed and big plays at Osage, 42-6

With its State Play-Off road laid out in front of it, the Waukon football team experienced a bump in that road when the Indians made a trip to Osage Friday, October 11 to play a Green Devil squad recently revived by the return of its starting quarterback, junior Quinn Street. The grid Tribe was victimized by a complete effort in all phases of the game by Osage, as four of the Green Devils’ six scoring drives came from 50 yards or more, including one on special teams, in addition to coming away with three turnovers on defense, two of which were capitalized on with touchdowns to further overshadow any momentum the Indians could build on the way to a 42-6 Waukon defeat.

“Their overall speed was a big problem for us, as it has been versus numerous opponents,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said in summary of his team’s loss. “We also tackled poorly. We brought pressure with linebackers and safeties, but even when we did get to Street in the backfield, we didn’t bring him down. One of their long TDs was just a run play, a naked bootleg, that turned into a pass play because we missed the tackle on Street. Then, our other blitzer, who might have finished the tackle, stopped coming. This gave Street more time. He was in trouble, but he looked downfield to see a man standing wide open because our defensive back, who was defending him man-to-man, left his man to go charging after the quarterback. The kid was standing there uncovered, Street flipped him the ball, we missed three more tackles, and it turned into a 69-yard TD.”
