The Waukon volleyball team had just one competition date on its schedule this past week, and that opportunity offered one final chance to record a win in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play as the Lady Indians hosted New Hampton in its final match of both its NEIC and regular season schedule. Despite a strong battle late into most of the match sets, the net Tribe ended up on the short end of each of three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-19 to surrender the match.
The Indians were outgunned by the visiting Chickasaws at the net by a 45-27 margin in kills, with the two teams misfiring at nearly equal levels at just 10 for the Tribe and 11 for New Hampton. Also equal were three blocks from each team, while the Chickasaws doubled up the Indians at 8-4 in ace serves while that reverse result happened in serve efficiency, where the net Tribe misfired on eight of its 55 attempts at that line and New Hampton gave back just five points on 74 serve attempts. The Indians had particular trouble stopping Chickasaw senior middle hitter Braelyn Rosonke, who hammered out 17 kills on the night, with New Hampton freshman Aleigha Cahoy also striking for double digits with 13 winners.
The net Tribe wrapped up its regular season schedule with a 17-10 season record that includes a Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) mark that fell short of the win column in four matches this season. The Lady Indians are next scheduled to play in the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament this Saturday, October 19 at Crestwood before opening Class 3A Regional Tournament play Tuesday, October 22 at and against North Fayette Valley, with details of that postseason tournament trail appearing in the Sports page of the Wednesday, October 16, 2024 edition of the Standard.
