Waukon volleyball team comes up shy of any match wins at NEIC Tournament to claim another fifth-place finish among league foes

The Waukon volleyball team played in its final competition event prior to postseason tournament action, taking part in what is destined to be the last-ever Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Tournament Saturday, October 19 hosted by Crestwood High School in Cresco. Having played through the NEIC dual match season without a match win and just a single set win against their four fellow NEIC foes, the Indian netters remained without a match win in their four matches at Saturday’s NEIC finale, being swept by Charles City, Crestwood, Decorah and New Hampton in two sets each to end up in fifth place in the final tournament team results.

The Indians’ closest match on the day came against the one team they won a NEIC set against this season, a Charles City squad that the Tribe had battled to a four-set loss against a month earlier in the season. The Lady Indians came close to equaling that feat of a NEIC set win against the Comets, trading blows back and forth to extra points in a 22-20 loss in set one before also coming within just three points in a 21-18 set-two defeat to surrender the match.

The net Tribe wrapped up its pre-regional tournament schedule with a 17-14 season record that includes a Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) mark that fell short of the win column in four matches this season, both in dual match and in this past weekend’s tournament competition. The Lady Indians were next scheduled to open Class 3A Regional Tournament play Tuesday, October 22 at and against North Fayette Valley.
