Betty Ann Engrav was born December 21, 1933, in Vernon County, WI, the daughter of Oral and Lillian (Dahl) Selin. Betty graduated from Viroqua High School in 1952, and received a teaching degree from Vernon County Teachers School in 1954. May 24, 1955, she married the love her life, Walter Alfred Engrav. She taught for several years before dedicating herself to raising her family.
Betty grew up with a love for learning and music and, together, she and Walter built a home filled with faith, love, and music, and lived in several communities over the years, including Stoddard, WI, Marion, Decorah, Richland Center, WI, Waukon, Pea Ridge, AR, and then returning to Waukon.
Betty’s favorite pastime was playing the piano. Her music was often filled with beloved gospel hymns that brought joy to family, friends, and anyone who happened to stop by. She could be seen on nice summer days taking long walks around town. Betty also loved searching for antiques at flea markets and was especially known for her homemade pies, which she baked with care and shared generously.
She is survived by her children: Rhonda (Dave) Bahr, Colleen Wicks, and Steven Engrav, all of Waukon; and Robert (Michelle) Engrav of Batesville, AR; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Jeff Thornton; a brother, Ronald Amman; three brothers-in-law, Curt Snitker, Richard (Edna) Engrav, and Ronald Tollackson; and two sisters-in-law, Lois Selin and Diane Amann.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Walter, in 2021; her daughter, Patty Thornton; two grandsons, Kevin Bulman and Jeremy Engrav; her daughter-in-law, Mary Engrav; her step-father, William “Willie” Amann; two brothers, Donald Amann and Robert Selin; and a sister, Phyllis Tollakson.
Betty’s family and friends will remember her for her quiet strength, her devotion to her family, her steadfast faith, and the music that so beautifully reflected her spirit. Casketbearers were Bob Bulman, Matt Tobin, Brian Bahr, Nic and Ryan Engrav, and Danny and Michael Thornton.
