ON TO STATE! Waukon girls wrestling junior Makenna Kurth wins 120-pound Regional title to earn qualification for State Tournament

Pinning her way back to the State Tournament ... Kurth recorded this fall in 1:46 for her third pin in a row on the way to claiming the 120-pound regional championship and her second qualification for the State Tournament, having also qualified two seasons ago for the season grand finale as a freshman. Jorja Johnson, Lily Baxter, Danika Reiser earn wrestleback opportunities, end up in third place

The lone competition for this past week for the Waukon girls wrestling team was one of opportunity for continuation of this 2025-2026 season with a required top-two individual finish, or quite possibly an end to it, as the Lady Indians competed in the Class 1A Region 3 Tournament hosted by Crestwood High School in Cresco Friday, January 30. That opportunity came to reality for one Lady Indian, as junior Makenna Kurth wrestled her way to the 120-pound championship and qualification for this year’s Class 1A State Wrestling Tournament.

Kurth led a Lady Indian charge that saw four members of the mat Tribe wrestle their way to top-four finishes in their  weight class to earn podium placement. Three of those four put themselves in position to earn wrestleback opportunities for their own chance at State Tournament qualification but had those opportunities come up a bit shy of extending this season while still helping Waukon to 115 team points and a fifth-place team finish in the tournament’s 17-team field.

ON TO STATE
With her championship finish at 120 pounds, Kurth will now compete in the Class 1A State Tournament being wrestled at Xtream Arena in Coralville this Thursday and Friday, February 5-6. Kurth will take to the mat Thursday morning in that season grand finale.
