Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) has been awarded a $74,925 grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to expand its commercial driver’s license (CDL) training program. The Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) grant will provide full tuition coverage for 15 qualified students, including veterans and their family members, over the next two years.
The grant addresses a critical regional need for skilled drivers. According to Lightcast, a labor market analytics company, the demand for CDL drivers in the NICC district is projected to grow by 12.8%, which is 4% higher than the national average. This growth is further complicated by a “retirement cliff,” as 25% of the current regional workforce is over the age of 55.
“Having a CDL license can be a very rewarding career,” said Martin Hemann, NICC transportation program developer. “There are many opportunities for employment, whether it be for a local or regional carrier or a nationwide trucking company. You can earn a good living and it can give you a sense of independence and opportunities to see the country.”
Dawn Fleming, NICC assistant director of financial aid and veterans affairs coordinator, noted the college’s long-standing dedication to military-affiliated students. NICC was recognized as a Silver-Level Military Friendly® School for the 2025-2026 academic year and has held its Military Friendly School status for several years.
“NICC is deeply committed to supporting veterans by fostering an environment that encourages them to apply the skills developed during their military service while preparing for meaningful, sustainable employment,” Fleming said. “That same commitment extends to their families. Many family members played a vital role in supporting their service members, and their success is just as meaningful. NICC is proud to support and encourage them in utilizing this pathway to become employment-ready and strengthen our community.”
The four-week, competency-based training program prepares students for Class A CDL testing through a combination of simulator instruction, online coursework and 100 hours of behind-the-wheel training at a speed that aligns with their prior learning and experience. Training is currently offered in Calmar, Peosta, New Hampton and Waukon.
NICC maintains a 93% job placement rate for its CDL graduates. The college partners with local employers such as Geothermal Eco Options, Portzen Construction, Caledonia Haulers and others to provide graduates with immediate employment opportunities.
