First University of Iowa student to earn the honor
Andrew Kelleher has been named a Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellowship recipient. A distinguished panel selected him out of nearly 1,000 outstanding candidates through a highly competitive nationwide process.
Kelleher is a 2014 graduate of Kee High School and served as Executive Director of Main Street Lansing from 2018 through 2023. He is currently in graduate school at American University in Washington, DC.
The Rangel Fellowship, funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Howard University, supports extraordinary individuals who want to pursue careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. The Rangel Fellowship will support Kelleher through a two-year master’s degree in an area of relevance to the Foreign Service. It will also provide extensive professional development opportunities, including internships, mentors, and skills training.
As part of the Rangel Program, Kelleher will work for a member of Congress on issues related to foreign affairs in summer 2026. In the summer of 2027, the U.S. Department of State will send him overseas to work in a U.S. Embassy or Consulate to get hands-on experience with U.S. foreign policy and the work of the Foreign Service. Upon successful completion of the program, Kelleher will become a U.S. diplomat, embarking on one of the most challenging and rewarding careers of service to his country. He will work to promote peace, prosperity, and human dignity around the world.
Rangel Fellows are committed to serving their country and promoting positive change globally. These aspects appealed to Kelleher’s career and personal goals. His professional background in Christian ministry and economic development showed him the power of bringing people together to create mutually beneficial solutions to complex problems.
