The Music Department in the Allamakee Community School District will be hosting its 17th annual Pops Concert this Friday, February 27 at the Waukon Middle School gymnasium. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with concert time scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Pops Concert is an annual fundraising event sponsored by the Allamakee Music Boosters and the Music Department in the Allamakee Community School District in an effort to support all music programs in the district. Groups performing will include the high school and middle school choirs, high school and middle school jazz bands, the drumline, featured soloists, song and dance skits, and emcees.
Every year, a handful of soloists are chosen to perform their pieces at the concert. These performances include singing, playing instruments, or a combination of both.
The musical event is directed by Fifth Grade and Waukon High School Band Director JoAnn Sherman, Waukon Middle School and High School Vocal Director Molly Woodard, and Waukon Middle School Band Director Tim Lund. These directors host try-outs for students and small groups of music students who would like to perform at the concert. These soloists have been practicing for months to perfect their performance piece.
The soloists who are performing this year include Trinity Protsman, Zeza Willoughby, Michael Koester, and Allison Dehli. A musical ensemble, including Nikki Knudson, Joslyn Tobin and Danika Reiser, will also be taking to the stage. EEKAMALLA, a rock band consisting of Roland Melcher, Gus Benjegerdes, Eireann Goettel, and Adrick Christensen, will also be performing an electric tune. Another group that will be performing at the Pops concert will be the Middle School Jazz Band, which offers middle schoolers the opportunity to learn the basics of jazz and to prepare them for an audience.
The Middle School Jazz Band (pictured above at a performance last year) is directed by Tim Lund, who says, “I am very proud of this year’s jazz band because of their willingness to pick out difficult songs and work hard at them. They were getting bored immediately with songs they could play well right away and wanted to give themselves a challenge, which has been awesome to be a part of.”
The Pops Concert is open to the public for general admission seating in the bleachers and chairs located in the Waukon Middle School gym. No school activity passes or booster club passes will be accepted. Tables, which can seat up to ten people, can also be sponsored. Table sponsors can decorate their tables, provide snacks/desserts to their guests, and invite family and friends to join in on the memorable night.
“I encourage people to sponsor a table at the Pops concert because it offers an excellent experience for you, your family and friends who you invite to enjoy the performances of the jazz bands, drumline, choirs, soloists, and ensembles,” says Allamakee Music Boosters President Tami Gebel. To reserve a table, contact Michele Huinker at 563-380-3467 to leave a message, or email at acsdmusicboosters@gmail.com.
The money raised from this event has been allocated in the past by the Allamakee Music Boosters to help purchase items such as new instruments, percussion equipment, risers, pianos, and various pieces of musical equipment for all grades, as well as provide scholarships for students to attend music camps. A Waukon Indian Keychain/Ornament Sale will be going on at the concert as well.
In case of inclement weather on the initially scheduled February 27 date, the back-up date for the Pops Concert performance has been set for Saturday, February 28 at 7 p.m.
