by Joe Moses
The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, April 27 to address an agenda of matters including the consideration of removing the Postville Herald as an official county newspaper, the consideration of gravel road rock bids, and accepting and placing on file quarterly reports for the County Sheriff’s office and Veterans Affairs office.
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Pro Tem Dan Byrnes with Supervisor Dennis Keatley present. Chairperson Tom Clark was not in attendance due to a scheduled absence.
During Public Comment, Byrnes made note of attending a recent Allamakee County Community Foundation (ACCF) meeting and the announcement relating to the organization’s new Executive Director, Jackie Cooper. Byrnes noted the retirement of Betty Steege, Executive Director, after serving 15 years in that capacity. He also discussed the Allamakee County Community Foundation’s important role as an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque in supporting area non-profit organizations through grant funding.
Following the time allotted for Public Comment, the meeting moved into Quarterly Reports for the County Sheriff’s office and Veterans Affairs office. Both reports were accepted and placed on file by the Supervisors.
County Auditor Denise Beyer and the Supervisors discussed the next matter relating to the consideration of removing the Postville Herald as an official county newspaper. Beyer advised that the Wednesday, April 8 edition of the Postville Herald was the final publication with that newspaper’s editor and full staff following Mid-America Publishing’s decision to shutdown that and several other company-owned newspapers. Beyer noted that the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) is continuing to produce a limited or shortened version of the Postville Herald with a variety of statewide news items while the INA seeks a new ownership group to continue operation of that newspaper.
Beyer and the Supervisors discussed the option of removing the Postville Herald as an official newspaper for the county’s public notices with the option available to reinstate the Postville Herald if regular operations under new ownership were to resume. Following discussion, the Supervisors approved to remove the Postville Herald as an official newspaper for the county, with The Standard newspaper now serving as the only official newspaper of Allamakee County.
