Local 4-H members take part in Intermediate 4-H Trip to western Iowa

Seventh and eighth grade 4-H members from across Allamakee, Chickasaw, Howard and Winneshiek counties recently participated in an Intermediate 4-H Trip that combined hands-on learning, history, and summer fun.
The group’s first stop was Jones Family Dairy near Spencer, a farm featuring a rotary milking parlor, where members had the opportunity to see how technology is transforming modern agriculture. Youth learned how the farm milks 2,000 cows on a 64-stall rotating parlor, how farmers use technology to monitor herd health, and the important role innovation plays in dairy production. The visit provided a unique look at the future of farming, and youth were able to walk through the freestall barn, feed a calf a bottle, and hand milk a cow.
Next, participants traveled to the Okoboji Classic Cars Museum, where they explored a collection of vintage automobiles and learned about the history and evolution of transportation. Youth enjoyed seeing vehicles from different eras and discovering how automotive design and technology have changed over time. They also viewed the museum’s hand-painted mural, which spans more than 28,000 square feet and features vintage storefronts and original marquee signs.
Along the way, the group made brief stops at the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend and at both Five Island Lake and West Okoboji Lake, giving youth the opportunity to experience some of Iowa’s unique landmarks and natural beauty.
Day two was spent at Arnolds Park, one of Iowa’s most beloved amusement parks. Youth spent the morning enjoying rides, attractions, and time with friends, creating lasting memories. The stop provided an opportunity for recreation, teamwork, and building friendships among fellow 4-H members.
The Intermediate 4-H Trip offered youth a well-rounded experience that blended education, exploration, and fun. Through opportunities like these, 4-H continues to help young people develop life skills, discover new interests, and connect with their communities.
