by Joe Moses
The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, October 5 to address a short agenda of matters including the consideration of the First Reading of a City Ordinance update changing the Robey Memorial Library budget submittal and the review of a Board of Adjustment variance approval, among other updates and discussion.
The meeting was called to order by Mayor Arvid Hatlan with council members present including Cassie Handke, Nicholas Engrav, Tim Smedsrud, John Lydon and Steve Wiedner.
There was no Public Comment with the meeting then moving into Department Reports. Park, Recreation and Wellness Director Jeremy Strub noted that the staining of Hideaway Park, a volunteer effort that had been scheduled for Wednesday, September 23 to stain the wooden park area within the Waukon City Park, was canceled due to weather conditions that week and surface moisture. Strub advised that the wood stain for this project has been put into storage with a new date for this volunteer activity anticipated to be set for sometime within June 2027.
Water and Sewer Superintendent Jim Cooper advised that the water system’s recent lead and copper testing results came back at good levels with this type of testing taking place every three years.
Cooper noted that the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) inspection report has been provided with that testing having gone well with only two infractions including one high chloride test over a two-year period and a higher-than-normal rate of solids intake recorded during one test day, both matters outside the control of the Wastewater Treatment Plant but still documented. In addition, Cooper discussed two small water line leaks to be addressed.
Street Superintendent Pat Egan noted that Street Department employees have moved back to the eight-hour per day/five-day work week for the winter season. He discussed leaf pick-up with an advertisement to be published in The Standard relating to that schedule and portions of town to be addressed. Egan also discussed street repairs and other ongoing projects.
