The annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Waukon has been scheduled for Sunday, March 13 and will begin at 1 p.m. with many of the same festivities taking place as in years past throughout the community.
The parade route will be the same as in past years, beginning from the southeast edge of town and heading up Rossville Road and Spring Avenue to the stoplight intersection with Main Street. Turning left on to West Main Street, the parade will venture up to Second Street SW, where the entries will turn left at the Post Office intersection, travel one block south to First Avenue SW, and then east back to Spring Avenue, turning right at Kwik Star to head back south to its point of origin.

This year's theme is "Forging Solutions out of Challenges"

Southcrest Manor II in Waukon is managed by Allamakee Housing, and health services are provided by staff from Northgate Care Center, who recognized all the tenants 90 or more years young at a Valentine's Day celebration held at Southcrest Manor II. Effigy Mounds National Monument continues to celebrate the 53rd Annual Winter Film Festival with free movies through the month of March. Show times for the film are 10 and 11 a.m., 12 noon, and 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. There will also be a 1 p.m. showing Mondays.
 Admission to the festival is free. The film schedule for the month of March is as follows:

The celebration is an annual event in which the residents have the opportunity to vote for one another, the winners receiving the honor of royalty.  Valentine’s Day cards, some of which were made by local youth and sent to the residents, were distributed during the party. This event also served as the stage for the christening of the facility’s new piano. Pianist Susan Sanderson entertained the residents and their guests, donors to the piano, and the public. A total of nearly 60 patients received the benefit of free dental care as the annual "Have a Heart" Day hosted by area dental care providers took place Saturday, February 13 for the 26th consecutive year. The event provided an opportunity for children four to 18 years of age, who have not recently seen a dentist for whatever reason, to receive necessary dental care at no charge.
The doctors and staff at Waukon Dental, Family Dentistry Associates of Monona and Dental Associates of Prairie du Chien, P.C. provided a variety of dental services throughout the busy Saturday, including examinations, extractions, fillings, sealants and dental hygiene cleanings, all at no cost to the patient. The extent of services provided to patients this year totaled more than $20,000 in free dental care.

What do green leafy vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, whole grains, fish, poultry, olive oil and a glass of wine all have in common?
These foods are all part of the MIND diet - a diet showing promise in reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Recent research conducted by Rush University and funded by the National Institute on Aging followed 923 individuals for almost five years. What they learned was that people who followed the MIND diet, even moderately, had a 53% reduction in dementia and the development of Alzheimer’s.

This past holiday season, Shopko Hometown collected signatures from customers as part of its "Help Us Give Back" initiative, a program that was run in all 219 Shopko Hometown store locations across the country. Customers could sign up between December 1-24 and for every signature received, the Shopko Foundation donated $1 (up to $2,000). Thanks to the community's support, the Shopko Foundation recently donated $2,000 to the Allamakee Community School District. In spite of famed groundhog Punxsutawney Phil not seeing his shadow and indicating an early arrival for spring, his day in the limelight, Tuesday, February 2 - Groundhog Day, provided little evidence of that happening as a snowstorm gripped northeast Iowa and dumped anywhere from eight to 10 inches of snow in Allamakee County. Snow falling at the rate of nearly two inches per hour at times during that Tuesday morning (as evident in the above photo) forced cancellation of area schools, closing of area businesses and the Allamakee County Sheriff's Office and Iowa State Patrol to issue warnings of no travel advised as five to six inches fell during the daytime hours. Another three to four inches followed overnight that Tuesday night, again forcing cancellation of schools for Wednesday, February 3.
