Iowa House of Representatives Democratic Leader Mark Smith of Marshalltown has appointed Representative Patti Ruff of McGregor to Ranking Member of the House Education Committee.
“As a former school board president and a mother of three, Rep. Ruff brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Iowa House,” said Smith. “She understands the challenges facing rural Iowa and will be a strong voice for the people of northeast Iowa.”
The House Education committee addresses pre-school and K-12 education issues, including school aid funding, as well as non-budget issues relating to higher education.

The Eastern Allamakee Community School District (EACSD) Board of Directors met Monday, December 15. In addition to regular business items, the Board was also treated to a presentation on highlights of the fifth grade service project conducted by New Albin Elementary School students.

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Directors met in regular session Monday, December 15. ACSD Superintendent Dave Herold addressed the Board regarding Section 73 of House File 215, a piece of State legislation regarding attendance center performance rankings.

The Allamakee County Conservation Board (ACCB) has announced the schedule for Winter of 2014-2015 public environmental education programs. The programs offered by the Allamakee County Conservation Board are free of charge and open to all ages, according to the following schedule:

A Winter Carnival will be held at County Home Park Saturday, December 20 from 1-3 p.m. Participants will be able to try snowshoeing on an unguided hike around County Home Park. All equipment will be provided by the Allamakee County Conservation Board on the day of the carnival on a first come, first serve basis. No registration is required.

The Waukon High School Guidance Office is hosting an Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) Financial Aid Presentation for high school seniors and their families. The program will be held Tuesday, December 16 at 6 p.m. in the Waukon High School Library.

This session is designed for senior students and their parents; however, both juniors and seniors could benefit from the information being presented. Some of the topics discussed will include:

At the November 17 Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Board of Trustees monthly meeting, members received an update on one of the College’s nine FY11-FY15 strategic priorities, “Foster a More Effective and Efficient Communication.”

Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) is providing teachers the opportunity to immerse their students in the world of agriculture through hands-on experiences. Awarded on a first-received, first-funded basis, accredited Pre-K-12 public, private or charter schools located within the 37-county Heritage Area may apply online for one grant per year with a maximum of $350 awarded per school. Field trips must have an agricultural component. Grant monies are to be used for transportation costs to and from any one of the over 100 SSNHA Partner Sites or farm site located within the Heritage Area. The grant cycle will remain open until all funds are depleted or until December 1 of this year.
