The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reporting that the final set of test results for deer collected during Iowa's 2014 hunting season did not reveal any additional positives for chronic wasting disease. The recent receipt of those final results closes the book on the 2014 deer season that included three positive samples from hunter-harvested deer in Allamakee County out of nearly 4,500 samples collected from across the state of Iowa.
Iowa has tested more than 55,000 wild deer from across the state since 2002. The three cases confirmed last December were within five miles of each other, all in southeast Allamakee County; and not far from where the first positive sample from a wild deer was found in December 2013.

The 2015 Allamakee County Dairy Parade traversed the streets of Waukon Monday, June 1, with a number of area businesses, families and organizations providing entries to pay tribute to the dairy industry. Among those parade entries were two of "relatively royal" status, as cousins Katie Kerndt (in left photo), daughter of Brad and Mary Kerndt of rural Waukon who wears the crown of the 2015 Allamakee County Dairy Princess, and Leslie Sivesind (right photo), daughter of Dan and Jane Sivesind of rural Waukon who wears the crown of the 2015 Iowa Guernsey Princess, were both representing their industry. In Waukon...
Rainshowers may have dampened the parade plans for the Memorial Day observance in Waukon Monday, May 25 but certainly not the spirit of honoring and remembering that goes hand-in-hand with the day's events. This year's featured speaker, Staff Sergeant Peter Bieber of the 1133rd Transportation Company of the Iowa Army National Guard, spoke of the history of the National Guard and his deployment experiences in Iraq, the first of which was cut short by injuries suffered in a mortar attack. Quilts of Valor honorings once again recognized the efforts and sacrifices of area veterans, and a weekend visit from the U.S.S. Wainwright mobile museum also gave area residents a unique first-hand look at life aboard a U.S. Navy ship experienced by local veterans Virgil Thorstenson and Dean Bechtel.

The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department recently concluded its investigation into allegations of sexual abuse by a Waukon couple that had occurred over time in rural Allamakee County.
Hans William Christianson of Waukon, age 33, has been charged with two counts of Third Degree Sexual Abuse (a class C felony), four counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor - Cause to Engage in Act (a class C felony) and ten counts of Second Degree Sexual Abuse (a class B felony). His wife, Sarah Paige Christianson, age 24, has been charged with ten counts of Third Degree Sexual Abuse. After their arrests, bond was set at $50,000 for Sarah Christianson and $150,000 for Hans Christianson. Both were later released after posting ten percent of their bond amounts.

Last week’s regular meeting of the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors was delayed until Tuesday, May 26 as a result of the Memorial Day holiday Monday, May 25. The Board then returned to regular session Monday, June 1.

Live Healthy Iowa recently announced its 2015 Cup Challenge winners, and for the fourth consecutive year, Allamakee County was crowned the winner of the Community Cup Challenge and remained the only community entity to win the Cup Challenge since its inception four years ago. Staff members from the Live Healthy Iowa and Iowa Sports Foundation organizations sponsoring the Cup Challenges made the trek to Waukon Wednesday, May 13 to present this year's Community Cup trophy (see accompanying photo) at an all too fitting venue, the Family Wellness Fair hosted by Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

A pair of quick-rising stars from different decades will be sharing the grandstand musical spotlight at the 162nd Allamakee County Fair scheduled for July 15-19 in Waukon. Chris Cagle, a self-labeled "redneck rock 'n roller" who took country music by storm following the turn of the century and is making a more mellow return to the country music scene these days, will headline the grandstand stage Friday, July 17. Country music newcomer Dylan Scott will be the opening act for Cagle, looking to make an early imprint on country music as he gets his career underway.

Monday, May 18, the Allamakee County Sheriff's Department, Waukon Police Department, Lansing Police Department and Iowa State Patrol joined forces in the execution of a pair of search warrants that led to the arrest of five individuals (pictured below) on various drug-related charges. A report from the Allamakee County Sheriff's office indicates that the warrants were executed as a result of an ongoing narcotics investigation by the Allamakee and Clayton County Sheriff's offices, with that investigation still continuing.
At approximately 6:15 p.m. that Monday, a search warrant was executed at a residence located at 301 Olive Street in Harpers Ferry. Methamphetamines, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and United States currency were all seized during the warrant execution. Four individuals were arrested on the following charges as a result of the investigation:

How many secrets can a building hold? Many, according to Molly Myers Naumann, architectural historian who led walking tours for approximately 60 people during the celebration of Lansing’s designation as a National Historic District May 7.
In an interview prior to the tours, Naumann described her role as a consultant for historic preservation and the process she uses to research such locations.

Staff Sergeant Peter J. Bieber of the 1133rd Transportation Company, Iowa Army National Guard will serve as featured speaker at the 2015 Memorial Day Observance Program being held at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon Monday, May 25. He is the son of James and Sue Bieber of Waukon and the late Julie Bieber, and a 1990 graduate of Waukon High School.
Monday’s program at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon will commence following the traditional parade that begins at 9:45 a.m. in front of the Allamakee County Courthouse and marches its way to the cemetery. In the event of rain, the program will be held at the Waukon Banquet Center.
