Allamakee County groups hosting Family Day event September 28 in Waukon

Community Connections, Allamakee County Substance Abuse Prevention and Helping Services for Northeast Iowa will be hosting a Family Day event Monday, September 28 at the Waukon High School cafeteria from 5-7 p.m. A free meal will be provided and fun activities will keep the night entertaining for the whole family. Join other families from all over the country in celebrating Family Day September 28 by eating dinner together as a family.
September 8 the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors signed a Family Day Proclamation dedicating September 28 as Family Day.
Joseph A. Califano, Jr. is quoted as saying, “America’s drug problem is not going to be solved in courtrooms or legislative hearing rooms by judges and politicians. It will be solved in living rooms and dining rooms and across kitchen tables – by parents and families.”
Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner with Your ChildrenTM is a national movement launched by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) in 2001 that promotes frequent family dinners as a simple, effective way to prevent substance abuse in kids.
Family mealtimes are important because children who do not eat dinner with their families are much more likely (61%) to use alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs. It is also know that teens who eat frequent family dinners are less likely than other teens to get into fights, be suspended from school, or engage in many other risky behaviors.  By eating with children, it is more likely that they will eat healthier foods and more balanced meals.
