Car vs. pedestrian accident results in fatal injuries

Rachel King of Waukon, age 73, died Monday, September 7 as a result of injuries sustained when she was struck by a car at the corner of East Main and Clinton Streets in Waukon Wednesday, September 2 at around 9:45 a.m. According to the accident report filed with the Iowa Department of Transportation, Brittanie Kay Lightfoot of Waukon, age 20, was traveling east on East Main Street and turning right onto Clinton Street when her vehicle struck King.
Deputy Clark Mellick of the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department said that minor damage was sustained to the passenger-side side-view mirror of Lightfoot’s vehicle. Mellick said that King was apparently struck by the mirror and fell to the ground, sustaining a head injury. King was transported by ambulance to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon and then to St. Francis Medical Center in La Crosse, WI, where she died.
Waukon Police Chief Clark Bollman said that Lightfoot has been charged with failure to provide proof of insurance at the scene of the accident. He added that other charges may be filed pending completion of the investigation of the accident.
