The Upper Iowa women’s basketball team recently handed out its 2004-05 team awards. Four different Peacocks, all freshmen, took home awards.
Freshman Christa Hammel of Waukon was voted Most Valuable Player by her teammates. The 6-1 forward averaged 9.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest. She also set a single-season school record with 53 blocked shots. Hammel is the first freshman in program history to earn team MVP honors.
“This is truly a measure of the respect Christa’s teammates have for her,” said UIU Head Coach Bill Wilson. “I am certain Christa is a player who will continue to reach her potential year in and year out as she grows in our program.”
While facing its first NCAA Division II schedule, the UIU women’s basketball team finished with an 8-19 record, including an 8-3 mark at home.
Hammel is a 2004 graduate of Waukon Senior High and the daughter of David and Karla Hammel of Dorchester.
