CODY KAMMEYER SETS NEW SCHOOL AND NEIC RECORD IN 1600 METERS, TRACK BOYS TAKE THIRD AT NEIC MEET

The Waukon Indian boys track team secured a third-place finish at the Northeast Iowa Conference meet held Thursday, May 11 at Charles City. The Indians scored one event victory and also compiled four second-place finishes and a pair each of third and fourth-place finishes at the meet to tally 72 team points and finish behind Class 3A powerhouse Waverly-Shell Rock and New Hampton.

"This was truly one of the best and most competitive conference meets I have seen in the 20 years I have been in Waukon," Waukon boys track coach Harlan Heidelbauer said. "There were some outstanding performances by a whole lot of schools. Not just a great effort by Waverly-Shell Rock, who dominated the meet and is most likely favored to win the Class 3A state title again this year, but by a whole bunch of different individuals and relay teams. It was truly an outstanding meet."
Waverly-Shell Rock dominated the meet by winning 13 of the 17 events, finishing runner-up in two more and adding another pair of fifth-place finishes. The Go-Hawks scored in all 17 of the meet's events, including nine double-placewinnings in the meet's 12 individual events. The Indians scored in all but two of the meet's 17 events, challenging Waverly-Shell Rock competitors for the top spot in all four of the Tribe's second-place event finishes in the meet.
"This was a total team effort for us, as far as I'm concerned," Coach Heidelbauer said. "We measure success in our program by how much the kids improve, and pretty much all of them that competed in this conference meet ran at or above their potential. That makes this a very successful conference meet for us. I was very pleased with the competitiveness of the kids. That competitiveness showed in the fact that we scored in nearly every single event."
Leading the list of Indian highlights at the NEIC meet was the record-breaking effort given by junior Cody Kammeyer in winning the 1600 meter run - the Tribe's lone win of the meet. After coming within a second or two of eclipsing the Waukon Indian boys track record in the event recently, Kammeyer finally etched his name alongside the 1600 meter school record with the NEIC championship in a time of 4:24.48. That time surpassed the previous mark of 4:26.85 set by 1991 Waukon Senior High School graduate Jeff Joiner, and it also set a new Northeast Iowa Conference meet record for the event.
"Cody just broke open a two or three-man race and took off on the final lap," Coach Heidelbauer said. "His final quarter-mile was just super."
Also among the Indian highlights was the effort of senior Josh Tweedy in the 800 meter run. Tweedy finished second in the event to Waverly-Shell Rock standout Cody Neuendorf by just one second in a time of 1:56.63, which was less than two-tenths of a second off the Waukon Indian boys track record of 1:56.46 set in the event by 1982 WSH graduate Steve "Moose" Gearhart during his junior season. Neuendorf's winning time of 1:55.63 and Tweedy's runner-up clocking of 1:56.63 both eclipsed the NEIC meet record in the event.
"The 1600 and 800 meter runs were both super competitive events," Coach Heidelbauer said. "The open 800 was simply an outstanding race. It took a 2:01 to even finish in sixth place in the event and a 1:57 to finish third. Each of those six placewinners will qualify for the state meet, as should the placewinners in the 3200 and the 1600. The time run by Kammeyer in the 1600 and the times run by Neuendorf and Tweedy in the 800 should put them right at the top of those events in the state meet pecking order."
The Indians also got another individual runner-up finish from senior Nick Farley in the 400 meter dash. Farley finished just over a second behind Waverly-Shell Rock's Brandon Zelle in a time of 52.72 seconds.
The other two Indian second-place finishes came in two relay events, the 4x800 and 4x400, and both finished second to Waverly-Shell Rock. The 4x400 crew of Farley, Josh Tweedy, senior Eddie Frick and junior Justin Bulman clocked in at 3:33.61, while the 4x800 squad of juniors Ben Stamper and Luke O'Neill, and Frick and Josh Tweedy was timed in 8:24.70 for second place.
The pair each of third and fourth-place Indian finishes all came in individual events and were equally distributed between field events and running events. Senior weightman Travis Schnuelle hurled the discus 136'3" for third in that event, while fellow senior Kirk Deal finished third in the 3200 meter run with a 10:15.99 clocking. Frick was a fourth-place finisher in the high jump with a leap of 5'8", while Justin Bulman claimed fourth in the 200 meter dash in 23.80 seconds.
