The dry and breezy weather last week continued to result in responses to grass fire calls for the Waukon Fire Department, as four of the five calls answered by the local volunteer crew this past week were to extinguish field and ditch fires. All of the calls took place later in the week within a four-day period.
Thursday, April 7 the local department was called to 1128 Sandhill Road for a grass fire. The following day, April 8, another grass fire was reported at 1312 Old Stage Road.
Saturday, April 9 resulted in a pair of calls for the department, the first one coming at the City of Waukon’s yard waste disposal site, where embers from the burning pile drifted into the neighboring field and caught the dry vegetation there on fire. Later that same day the local volunteers responded to a ditch fire about four miles south of Waukon on State Highway 76.
The lone non-grass fire call for the week came Sunday, April 10 at 1058 Partridge Drive. A skid loader had caught fire and was extinguished by the department.
