INDIAN BOYS TRACK TEAM FINISHES SECOND AT OWN INDIAN RELAYS; TRIBE'S CONSECUTIVE WIN STREAK HALTED AT SEVEN

The streak is over at seven for the Waukon Indian boys track program.
Seven is the number of consecutive team wins the Indian track boys had racked up at their own home invitational, claiming the meet title in each of the seven previous seasons, dating back to 1993. A solid top-end performance by a strong New Hampton squad put an end to that streak Thursday, May 4, however, the Chickasaws outscoring the Tribe by 27 points to become this year's Indian Relays team champion. The Indians finished second at the meet, which was held at the Waukon Senior High School track and was the only competition for the Tribe this past week.

"There were a couple of disappointments in the meet, a dropped a baton in one relay and a DQ (disqualification) in another event, that I think hurt us, point-wise," Waukon boys track coach Harlan Heidelbauer said. "So, we finished second to a very strong New Hampton team. Those lost points would have made it a considerably closer team race. However, overall, I thought the kids competed pretty hard. We're still feeling very good about the overall performance and improvement we keep showing."
New Hampton used a combined effort of 12 first and second-place finishes in the meet's 17 events, claiming five event crowns. The Indians were able to muster just six event finishes in the top two, splitting those equally between wins and runner-up finishes.
Two of the three Indian wins came in individual events, with seniors Nick Farley and Eddie Frick supplying the victorious efforts. Farley ran a 52.62-second quarter-mile in topping the 400 meter dash field, while Frick leaped 5'10" to take top honors in the high jump. Frick also anchored the Tribe's 4x800 relay to the only other Indian victory in the meet, teaming up with senior Kirk Deal and juniors Ben Stamper and Luke O'Neill to break the tape in a time of 8:30.50.
Two of the Tribe's three second-place finishes also came in individual events and also came from seniors. Josh Tweedy finished runner-up in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:02.78 and Travis Schnuelle did likewise in the discus with a heave of 127'6". The Indians' other second-place event finish came in the 4x400 relay, where Nick Farley, Frick, Deal and Josh Tweedy turned in a senior-laden runner-up effort with a clocking of 3:33.50.
Eight third-place Indian finishes did much to help the Tribe to its runner-up team finish. Junior Cody Kammeyer supplied two of those bronze medal efforts, finishing third in the 3200 meter run in 10:11.38 and also following Tweedy to the wire in the 800 meter run in 2:06.31.
Frick and Deal also each claimed an individual third-place finish, Frick in the 400 meters in 54.35 seconds and Deal in the 400 meter hurdles in 59.27. Another trio of juniors were also individual third-place finishers for the Tribe, Ben Ryner clearing the 110 meter high hurdles in 17.07, Justin Bulman burning up the 100 meter straightaway in 24.69, and Bryan Einck soaring a personal best 19'0" in the high jump.
"One big positive coming out of this meet was the fact that we came out of the field events with more points than we've had in most meets this season," Coach Heidelbauer said. "That will be a big key as to how we do at the conference meet. We'll need to keep those field event points coming in order to be competitive in that meet."
The Tribe's other third-place event finish came in the 4x100 relay. Einck, senior Brian Dahlstrom, Nick Farley and Justin Bulman combined their fleetness of foot to take third in that event in 47.40 seconds.
"Another big positive from this meet was our JV half-milers and quarter-milers," Coach Heidelbauer said. "We have a lot of young 400 and 800 meter runners showing a tremendous amount of improvement, showing they are truly ready to fill some holes for us."
