INDIAN GIRLS GOLF SEASON COMES TO AN ABRUPT HALT WITH THIRD-PLACE DISTRICT TOURNAMENT FINISH

The 2000 season for the Waukon Indian girls golf team came to somewhat of a surprise ending Monday, May 15 with the Tribe's third-place finish at its Class 2A District Tournament at Luana's Tri-City Golf Course. The Indians needed at least a second-place finish in the team or individual standings to advance on to the regional level of play, but came up just a couple strokes shy of that feat, bringing this season to a close.
Prior to that tournament competition, the Indians defeated two of three opponents in dual meet action, downing North Fayette at West Union Tuesday, May 9 by a 202-219 count and then finishing in the middle of a triangular meet at Caledonia Friday, May 12. The Indians wrapped up their dual meet schedule with an overall record of 11-3. That mark includes a Northeast Iowa Conference record of 5-1.

at North Fayette ...
The Indian golf girls swept the medals to down host North Fayette by a 202-219 tally at West Union Tuesday, May 9. The Indians got a medalist performance of 45 from junior Greta Martin and a runner-up medalist effort of 49 from senior Alicia Burke to aid their cause.
"We didn't shoot all that well, but well enough to win," Waukon girls golf coach Don Angel said. "I think we suffered a little bit of a letdown after winning the conference tournament the day before."
In addition to the medal-winning efforts of Martin and Burke, the Indians also counted two rounds of 54 from junior Kelli Egan and freshman Andrea Blocker. Seniors Cassie Reinke and Michelle Irons also competed for the Indian varsity, Reinke shooting a 62 and Irons a round of 65.
North Fayette counted rounds of 53, 54 and 56 (twice) for its varsity team total of 219.
The Indian junior varsity was also victorious at the meet, downing North Fayette by a 233-257 count. Sophomore Kristal Clark led the Indians with a round of 56.
Freshmen Maria Johnson and Sarah Burroughs were next in line for the Tribe with rounds of 58 and 59 respectively, with sophomore Kristin Burke completing the Indian team total with a round of 60. Freshman Gina Sweeney turned in a 65 and sophomore Denise Clark a 66 in competition for the Indian junior varsity.
North Fayette counted rounds of 60 (twice), 65 and 72 for its junior varsity team total of 257 strokes.

at Caledonia ...
The Indian golf girls suffered just their third defeat of the season in a Friday, May 12 triangular meet at Caledonia, but also picked up another win by finishing second at the meet. The Indians' 195 could not quite get past the host Warriors' 189 team total, but left Mabel-Canton and its team total of 340 well behind.
Indian junior Greta Martin led the Indians and the meet's entire field with a round of 44 for medalist honors. Three Caledonia golfers shared runner-up medalist honors, all with rounds of 47, with a 48 also being added to complete the Warriors' team total at 189 strokes.
In addition to Martin's 44, the Indians also counted rounds of 49 from freshman Andrea Blocker, 50 from senior Cassie Reinke, and 52 from junior Kelli Egan. Seniors Alicia Burke and Michelle Irons also competed for the Indians, turning in respective rounds of 61 and 66.
Mabel-Canton counted rounds of 72, 74, 79 and 115 from just four golfers competing at the meet.
The Indian junior varsity went head-to-head with Caledonia at the meet, falling to the host Warriors by a 200-234 final result. Sophomore Kristal Clark paced the Indians with a 54.
Freshman Maria Johnson turned in a 56, sophomore Kristin Burke shot a 58 and freshman Sarah Burroughs compiled a 66 to round out the Tribe's junior varsity team scoring. Caledonia counted rounds of 49 (twice), 50 and 52 for its junior varsity team total of 200.

District Tournament ...
After a stellar championship performance at the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament a week earlier, the Indian golf girls seemed to be on track for an extensive postseason tournament trail as they headed into Class 2A District Tournament play Monday, May 15 at Luana's Tri-City Golf Course. The Tribe had already played, and beaten, every team, except one, playing in that district tournament, leaving the three NEIC teams in the district field behind by nearly 20 strokes in claiming that league crown a week ago.
What seems to be a sure thing isn't always that way, however, and the Indian lady linksters found that out the hard way by finishing third at that district tournament, just two strokes out of advancing further into the postseason. Instead, it was two NEIC schools, Decorah and Crestwood, who played well enough to move on to regional play, taking both the top two team spots and top two individual spots at the tournament.
After finishing ahead of Decorah by 19 strokes and Crestwood by 30 strokes at last Monday's Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament with a team total of 374, the Indians ballooned to a 404 at the district tourney, finishing just two strokes behind Crestwood's 402 and well behind Decorah's 381.

TEAM SCORES
Decorah 381, Crestwood 402, WAUKON 404, Central/Garnavillo 414, New Hampton 425, South Winn 452, North Fayette 458, MFL/Mar Mac 469

The Indians were led by junior Greta Martin and her 18-hole total of 96, with a pair of 102s from freshman Andrea Blocker and senior Alicia Burke, and a 104 from senior Cassie Reinke completing the team total. Junior Kelli Egan was also in competition for the Tribe, shooting a 109 that was not counted.
Decorah's Emily Larson earned medalist honors for the meet with an 87, with Crestwood's Mandy Schwickerath finishing as runner-up medalist with an 89. Decorah also counted rounds of 96 (twice) and 102 for its team championship total, with Crestwood adding rounds of 97, 105 and 111 to complete its runner-up total.
