INDIAN GOLF BOYS WRAP UP DUAL MEET SEASON WITH BACK-TO-BACK WINS, END OF SEASON IN SIGHT WITH FOURTH-PLACE FINISH AT SECTIONALS

The end of the 2000 Waukon Indian boys golf season is in sight, unfortunately, for the Indian linksters, as the Tribe could not quite clear its first postseason tournament hurdle and will not extend its season beyond the Tuesday, May 16 Northeast Iowa Conference meet. The Indians finished fourth in the eight-team Class 3A Sectional Tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, May 12, coming up short of advancing to the district tourney.
Prior to that tournament competition, the Indians did bring their dual meet season to a successful close with back-to-back wins at New Hampton, 160-174 Monday, May 8, and over North Fayette at home, 146-163 Tuesday, May 9. Those victories wrapped up the Tribe's regular season dual meet mark at 8-3-1 overall, 3-3 in the Northeast Iowa Conference.
The Tribe's season-ending Northeast Iowa Conference meet at Charles City was originally scheduled for Monday, May 15, but was rescheduled for Tuesday, May 16 due to a scheduling conflict at the Charles City golf course.

at New Hampton ...
The 2000 Northeast Iowa Conference dual meet season came to a close for the Indian golf boys with a Monday, May 8 meet at New Hampton. The Tribe brought its NEIC season to a successful close with a 160-174 win over the host Chickasaws, completing its NEIC record at 3-3 for the year.
"I thought we golfed very well," Waukon boys golf coach Leon Mindham said. "None of our golfers had played this course before. The course was very hilly, with a lot of water in the form of ponds that came into play. Also, there were several out-of-bounds areas. Matt Johnson shot an excellent round, as well as Brady Iverson, a freshman on JV."
Indian junior Matt Johnson paced the Indians and the entire field with a round of 36 for medalist honors, just ahead of New Hampton's Derek Sauser and his 37. Senior Mike Blocker and junior Heath Hesse both finished with rounds of 40, with junior Nate Novak completing the Indian team total with a 44.
Junior Billy Van Gorp and senior Mike Wadsworth rounded out the Indian varsity effort at the meet, Van Gorp shooting a 48 and Wadsworth a 49. In addition to Sauser's runner-up total of 37, New Hampton counted rounds of 44 (twice) and 49 for its total of 174 strokes.
The Indian junior varsity also came away victorious at New Hampton, defeating the host Chickasaws by a 185-189 result. The Indians were led by the freshman pair of Brady Iverson, with a 43, and Roger Martin, with a 45.
Sophomores Chad Bakkum and Michael Fossum completed the Indian team total with rounds of 47 and 50 respectively. Sophomore Kevin Martin, with a 53, and freshman Ryan Jacobs, with a 60, also competed for the Indians. New Hampton counted rounds of 41, 47, 50 and 51 for its JV total of 189.

vs. North Fayette ...
The Indian golf boys burned up their home course in closing out their regular season dual meet schedule with a 146-163 triumph over North Fayette Tuesday, May 9. The Tribe's 146 is believed to be a new school record for Waukon boys golf, as Coach Leon Mindham hasn't been able to find an Indian team score lower than that in the past records he has.
"It seemed like everyone was shooting well, varsity as well as our JV," Coach Mindham said. "Mike Blocker shot our first sub-par round since I started here, and Hesse would have had a 34 also, but four-putted hole number three. Matt Johnson shot an excellent round, as well as Mike Wadsworth. I believe the 146 is a new school record for Waukon boys golf."
Indian senior Mike Blocker and junior Heath Hesse swept the medals at the meet, Blocker claiming medalist honors with a 34 and Hesse following him with a 36 to finish as runner-up medalist. Two rounds of 38 by senior Mike Wadsworth and junior Matt Johnson completed the Tribe's team total.
Juniors Nate Novak and Billy Van Gorp also competed for the Indian varsity, Novak shooting a 40 and Van Gorp compiling a round of 44. North Fayette counted three rounds of 40 and a round of 43 to finish its team total at 163 strokes.
The Indian junior varsity was able to just edge North Fayette by a 170-172 final result. Freshman Roger Martin led the Indians with a round of 39, with sophomore Chad Bakkum finishing with a 42 and freshman Brady Iverson and sophomore Michael Fossum completing the Indian team total with rounds of 43 and 46 respectively.
North Fayette counted two rounds of 41 and two rounds of 45 to complete its junior varsity team total at 170 strokes.
The Indians also had rounds completed by sophomores Kevin Martin and David Miller, Martin shooting a 48 and Miller a 49. Also completing rounds for the Indians were: freshman Zach Bulman (46), freshman Ryan Jacobs (50), sophomore Tom Howe (54), freshman Scott Stilwell (54), freshman Brett Koch (57) and freshman Thayer Jacobs (68).

Sectional Tournament ...
The Indian golf boys were a little off the pace at their Class 3A Sectional Tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, May 12, but had a pair of individuals who were right on the verge of extending their seasons past the early part of this week. The Indians finished fourth in their postseason-opening tournament with a team total of 325 strokes, needing at least a second-place finish at the event to advance to the district level of tournament play.

TEAM SCORES
Waterloo Columbus 305; Oelwein 311; Charles City 321; WAUKON 325; Decorah 330; New Hampton 335; Waverly-Shell Rock 340; Crestwood 370

Leading the Indian cause were a pair of 76s turned in by Indian senior Mike Blocker and junior Heath Hesse. Both those totals were just off the medalist and runner-up medalist totals of 73 and 74 that also earned the right to advance to district tournament play in the Class 3A postseason medalist competition. Those totals were both turned in by Waterloo Columbus players, Andy Bembridge and Ben George.
"Close, very close," Waukon boys golf coach Leon Mindham said. "Mike and Heath were both right in there for the medalist competition, but just came up a couple strokes short. I thought we'd have to shoot around 310 to move on, but we shot about as well as we could. Waterloo Columbus has an excellent team, with just two seniors. Oelwein is very young, with three sophomores and three freshmen on their varsity."
In addition to the rounds of 76 turned in by Blocker and Hesse, the Indians counted an 85 from junior Matt Johnson and an 88 from junior Billy Van Gorp to round out their team total at 325 strokes. Junior Nate Novak, with a 92, and freshman Roger Martin, with a 99, also competed for the Indians.
In addition to their medal-winning totals of 73 and 74, Waterloo Columbus also counted rounds of 78 and 80 to claim top team honors with its 305. Oelwein counted rounds of 76, 77 and 79 (twice) for its runner-up team total of 311.
