Joanna Oden launches Navy career

Navy Seaman Joanna R. Oden, graduate of Waukon Senior High School, completed her U.S. Navy basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Command in late December of 2004.
Oden successfully completed training in Naval customs, water safety and survival, ship and aircraft safety, first aid, firefighting and physical fitness. She distinguished herself in taking first place in fitness training by executing 204 sit-ups in 5 minutes, competing against 963 other recruits, both male and female. Oden also had the honor of being selected to act as drum majorette in leading the Navy band for the formal graduation ceremony.
Seaman Oden has been assigned to attend the Language Defense Institute at Monterey, CA for two years of intensive training where she will become proficient in one or more foreign languages that "meet the needs of the Navy".
Seaman Oden is the daughter of Steve and Robin Oden of Waukon.
