Local 4-H’ers meet with Legislators ...

More than 475 Iowa 4-H'ers and adult leaders spent March 22 showcasing 4-H community service projects and learning about the legislative process during 4-H Day at the Legislature. The event is organized by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension 4-H Youth Development and supported financially by the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Kate Phipps, Kaila Egan, Tara Meyer, Jodi Sweeney and Dacia Johnson represented Allamakee County at the event. All represented the Clover Chasers 4-H Club. 4-H'ers from 61 counties participated. The 4-H members spent part of the day meeting with legislators and showcasing their community service projects, from adopt-a-highway, community beautification and food pantries, to meth awareness, military care packs and youth-taught computer courses for older citizens. “It was exciting to be able to meet with the people who represent us in our state government. It was a great day,” said Phipps. 4-H'ers also toured Meredith facilities, the Capitol Building and the Supreme Court. This was the first visit to the Capitol for several of the members. They were able to tour the dome and observed the House of Representatives in session. Each of the 4-H members received a cookbook from the tour of Meredith Corp. 4-H'ers started the day at the Historical Building with an omelet breakfast provided by the Iowa Egg Council and Anderson Erickson. ISU Collegiate 4-H'ers arrived in Des Moines at 6:30 a.m. to perfect their omelet-cooking skills, under the supervision of Iowa Egg Council employees.
