Mayor, three council seats up for election

Residents of the City of Waukon will make their way to the polls Tuesday, November 3 to elect three members to the Waukon City Council, along with the City's Mayor. Each of the three council seats up for election features a different candidate situation, with the mayor seat once again having a contested race.
In that mayoral race, incumbent Keith Schroeder will face a challenge from Loren Beneke. Schroeder is nearing the end of his first two-year term in the mayor's office, with Beneke seeking the seat for the first time.
The three council seats up for election feature one uncontested race, as First Ward representative Steve Wiedner faces no declared challenger in seeking re-election. Wiedner will be seeking his second full term in office after initially being appointed to his seat to fill the remainder of a vacated term and then being re-elected in 2005.
Waukon's Third Ward will have a new representative, as 12-year Waukon City Council veteran Rod Peterson is not seeking re-election this year after three full terms. Vying for that open council seat will be candidates Robin Oden and John Ellingson.
The other council seat up for election this year is the At-Large position currently held by Joe Cunningham, who will be seeking his third At-Large term after first being elected in 2004 to fill a vacancy in that seat and then winning re-election in 2005. Jeremy Strub has also declared himself a candidate for that At-Large seat, seeking his first city government representation.
Also on the City Election ballot will be two seats on the Veterans Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees. Both of those seats are uncontested, as incumbent candidates Revelyn Lonning and Patty Fosaaen are each seeking re-election to their respective positions.
