Thunder in the Park scheduled to return June 13-15

“Thunder in the Park,” the Civil War battle reenactment that debuted in the area in June of last year, returns to Allamakee County this year, providing an opportunity to experience a bit of American history. The event will be held in the Waukon City Park June 13-15. Saturday and Sunday admission is free to the public, and all are welcome to attend. (Free-will donations will be accepted and applied to expenses of future events.)
The “Thunder” will be produced by the cannons on the battlefield, as battles of the Civil War are replayed for today’s observers. There will be opportunities to learn about how the soldiers lived during the war, and there will be educational and entertaining programs scheduled all three days to give those in attendance a taste of how life was lived in those times. Reenactors will portray important historical figures, such as General Ulysses S. Grant, President Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln and Civil War nurse Cordelia Harvey, to provide perspective from those times.
Some events, such as kid’s games, sewing and quilting demonstrations, and displays and demonstrations of weapons of that era, will be ongoing all day Saturday and Sunday. More information and a schedule of all events will be forthcoming in future issues of The Standard.
