VERNON HAMMEL

Vernon C. Hammel, 83, died June 12 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon. Funeral service was held June 15 at St. Patrick’s Church, Waukon, under the direction of Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg. Burial took place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.
Vernon Hammel was born December 8, 1916, in La Crosse WI, to Charles and Mae (LaTronch) Hammel. On September 9, 1946, he married Dorothy Buwa at St. Mary’s, Lycurgus. He and his wife lived in Lansing and Waukon at different times during their marriage.
Despite being crippled from birth he never let his disability stand in the way of achieving the things that he set out to do.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mae; his wife, Dorothy; a brother, Richard Hammel; and two sisters, Rita German and Mary Bedner.
He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Ward, McGregor; grandchildren, Jacob and Jodi Hammel; great-grandchildren Christian and Sebastian Hammel; a brother, Robert Hammel; and sisters Irene Lewey and Josephine Ingles.
Pallbearers were Vernon’s close friends and family.
Hanson Funeral Home, Waukon, assisted the family.
