Wiedner unopposed in First Ward

1) Please provide some background information about yourself.

Steve Wiedner: I am a lifelong resident of the community. I've been married 42 years to Kathy, with two grown, married children, Katie and Molly, and two grandchildren, Brooklyn and Madilyn.
I have been employed in local automotive businesses, owned my own business, and taught for 15 years at the Community College, from which I retired.
Before serving on the Council, I volunteered on several committees and worked on the bond issue for the new school and wellness center.

2) As a potential City Council member, what do you feel would be your ultimate responsibility to the citizens of Waukon?

Steve Wiedner: My responsibility is to the citizens of Waukon to see that the City keeps ahead of the present and future needs of the city and to see that their tax money is spent wisely for the benefit of all.

3) If elected, what would be your issues of highest priority in helping direct city government?

Steve Wiedner: I see the priorities of:
A) Trying to attract and start new businesses, especially to the downtown area;
B) Retain and improve the present businesses;
C) To plan an infrastructure that will accommodate needed residential and business growth without overextending our resources.

4) What are the current issues, good and bad, that you see facing Waukon, and what does your candidacy offer in addressing those issues?

Steve Wiedner: As with many communities, Waukon is faced with the need to repair old water, sewer and street systems and add new sections to developing areas. There is never enough money to do all desired projects quickly, so the Council must plan for the best way to spend available funds. This also includes seeking grants where available to have continued progress in the near and distant future.

5) In your view, what will it take to allow Waukon to not only survive, but thrive in the future?

Steve Wiedner: The City of Waukon needs to find its place in the changing economic conditions that we are all facing and to take advantage of our many resources in developing the community. Such ideas as small, flexible businesses able to adapt to the new economy and technology. New ideas like an air park community around the airport and a system of walking/biking trails throughout the area, and even small beautification areas around the city.
We, as citizens, have a wonderful opportunity to be on the leading edge of community development and I am very excited about our great opportunities.
