Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care travels Allamakee County and beyond


VMH Community and Home Care ... Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care offers adults the assistance they need to remain living in their homes, as long as possible. Registered nurses and trained home care aides travel the Allamakee County and surrounding area offering nursing care and in-home assistance to people of all ages. They offer a variety of services including nursing visits, medication set-up and administration, dressing cares, IVs, catheter and colostomy cares, oversee rehabilitation in-home programs, personal cares, housework, laundry, meal preparation and errands. RN staff is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Home Care Aide services are available seven days a week as need determines. VMH to offer free health tests plus “Cell Phone Sanitation” and “Effects of Smoking” at 2018 Allamakee County Fair


VMH offering free health tests and education at County Fair ... Veterans Memorial Hospital will be offering a variety of free health tests and education at the 2018 Allamakee County Fair. Testing and educational materials will change daily. The exhibit pictured above will be available for all ages to see the actual effects of smoking on a real pair of lungs opening night of the fair, Wednesday evening, July 18, from 6-10 p.m. This exhibit, pictured here at the hospital’s wellness fair in May, was very popular and will include smoking cessation information. Diabetes Support Group will not meet

The VMH Diabetes Support Group will not hold a meeting in July.

The group will begin holding its regular monthly meetings again in August. For more information, call Angie Mettille, RN, Diabetes Educator at Veterans Memorial Hospital at 563-568-3411.

The members of the Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital are actively recruiting new and returning members to join them during their annual membership drive.

Hospital Auxiliary Euchre Marathon to be held July 19

The Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital will be holding its monthly Euchre Marathon for all individuals of the community interested Thursday, July 19. Men and women are welcome to attend, even if not an Auxiliary member. The Euchre marathons are held the third Thursday of each month at the Senior Citizens Room at the Waukon Wellness Center located on the west edge of Waukon.

The Auxiliary’s Euchre Marathons begin at 11:30 a.m. with dinner, if chosen.  Call Northland Agency on Aging at 877-838-8077 if choosing to eat dinner. Card playing will follow at 12:30 p.m. until approximately 2:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to stay and play cards following the Senior Citizens meal is more than welcome to do so. All proceeds go towards the Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital. Prizes will be awarded.

Anyone interested in attending, but preferring to play Bridge is also welcome to join in.  It is asked that they come with their own table of four players, however.

Waukon Community Blood Drive set for August 10

The community is invited to donate blood Friday, August 10 from 12-5 p.m. at the Good Samaritan Society located at 21 East Main Street in Waukon. The drive will be held in the living room of the facility.

LeRoy and Bonnie Jones 65th wedding anniversary

LeRoy and Bonnie Jones of Harpers Ferry celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with family July 11. LeRoy Jones and Bonnie Bollman were united in marriage July 11, 1953 at the Monona Methodist Church.

They have eight children including Dale (Pam) Jones of Waukon, Loren (Georgia) Jones of McGregor, Cindy Moose of Waukon and Paul (Lynn) Jones, Mark (Brenda) Jones, Russ Jones, Gary Jones and Keith Jones, all of Harpers Ferry. The couple’s family also includes grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Paul and Kathy Howes 50th wedding anniversary celebration

Paul and Kathy Howes of Waukon are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary August 4, 2018 with a casual reception at the Empty Nest Winery, 1352 Apple Road, Waukon. All friends and relatives are encouraged to join them for a celebration of their marriage from 3-6 p.m. No gifts are requested.

The couple exchanged vows November 23, 1968. Due to the unpredictable weather conditions in November and the proximity to Thanksgiving, the August date was chosen as an alternative time for their anniversary celebration. Their children are Jennifer (John) Kuzma of Clearwater, FL and Jason and Laurie (Maxwell) Howes of Dorchester.

Randy and Pam Smith of Waukon will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Randy Smith and Pam Luth were married July 22, 1978.

They are the parents of Heath (Juli) Smith of Prairie du Chien, WI and Ryan (Kari) Smith of Waukon. They also have six grandchildren, Landon, Briar, Quinn, Roslin, Ewan and Liam.

Wayne and Sandra Fish 60th wedding anniversary

Wayne and Sandra Fish of Waukon will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary July 20. Wayne Fish and Sandra Shafer were united in marriage July 20, 1958 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon.

They have two daughters, Debra (Mark) Palmer of Waukon and Wanda (Dan) Brown of Madrid. The couple has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Lars (Jen) Palmer and Henry, Lane (Eric) Rich and      Knightley and Natalie, and Lindsey (Tim) Lund and Ella, all of Waukon, and Shannon (Joe) Knudsen,  Breanna and Claire of Madrid and Donald (Kayla) Brown and Carson of Decorah.
