March is National Nutrition Month: 10 reasons why you will want to drink a green smoothie everyday

by Jill Fleming, MS, RD/LD
Veterans Memorial Hospital

You may have heard about Green Smoothies, but have you ever tasted one? If not, you may want to reconsider.  Here is a short list of why you will gladly add a Green Smoothie to your daily diet. We have provided two recipes for you to try. Feel free to substitute any of your favorite fruits or vegetables.

To Lose Weight: When I work with weight loss patients, one of the easiest ways for them to start losing weight is to add more fruit,  vegetables and water to their daily diets. My most successful weight loss clients are now eating a total of 8-10 servings of fruit or vegetables daily. To easily reach this goal; eat more vegetable-based soups, make omelets loaded with vegetables and drink green smoothies often.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Northeast Iowa offering Family Support Group each month in Decorah

Mental illness can affect persons of any age, race, religion or income. Despite what the popular throught may be, mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing.

When someone is struggling with a mental health condition, it affects their whole family, not just the person who received the diagnosis. Family members and caregivers can often feel overwhelmed or powerless as they try to learn more about the illness, treatment options, and how they might be able to help.

If these feelings sound familiar to anyone looking for some extra support, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Northeast Iowa’s Family Support Group might be the place to find that support and learn to overcome or manage those feelings of being overwhelmed or powerless. NAMI is dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults diagnosed with mental illnesses, as well as their families.
