Commercial Manure Applicator Training scheduled to be held in Allamakee County

Commercial manure applicators should plan to attend the Commercial Manure Applicator training program scheduled for Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 9 a.m. to noon. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), will conduct the required three-hour training workshop at that time.

There is no fee to attend the workshop, but commercial applicators must register by December 28 by contacting the ISU Extension and Outreach Allamakee County office at 563-568-6345.

Goodfellas Riding Club shares generosity with recent donations...

Goodfellas Riding Club, through the generosity of its supporters and the surrounding communities during fundraisers and other events, was able to donate funds and gifts to several different local organizations recently. Kee girls basketball team’s sweep of three games this past week includes snapping of six-game losing streak to Turkey Valley with 40-38 home win

The Kee girls basketball team played through an undefeated week in its busiest week of the season so far, sweeping three games by varying degrees. That sweep began with a 40-38 home triumph Tuesday, December 12 over a Turkey Valley team the Lady Hawks have not beaten in any of the last three seasons before the Kee hoopsters hit the road to pummel South Winneshiek, 51-29, Friday, December 15 and then post a 33-22 victory over Grand Meadows, MN at the Iowa-Minnesota Border Battle hosted by Luther College in Decorah Saturday, December 16.

Kee was next scheduled to wrap up the pre-holiday portion of its schedule with a pair of final home games, hosting Mabel-Canton, MN Tuesday, December 19 and then De Soto, WI Thursday, December 21 before their schedule enters its holiday break. The Lady Hawks will then return to action Tuesday, January 2 at Clayton Ridge before hosting Starmont Tuesday, January 9.

Kee boys basketball team falls in Upper Iowa Conference pair

The Kee boys basketball team played two final Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) games prior to the holiday break, falling in both contests. The Hawks fell to Turkey Valley at home Tuesday, December 12 by a 71-54 final result before suffering the same fate on the road, an 80-42 defeat at South Winneshiek Friday, December 15.

Currently holding a 2-6 season record, including a 2-4 start to the Upper Iowa Conference season, Kee was next slated to wrap up the pre-holiday portion of its schedule with a Monday, December 18 game at De Soto, WI. Kee is then slated to return to action after the holidays with back-to-back dates, hosting Houston, MN Thursday, January 4 before playing at Clayton Ridge Friday, January 5.

Waukon wrestling team falls at Crestwood, places fifth at Starmont

The Waukon wrestling team brought the 2017 portion of its season schedule to a close with a couple more late-week competitions this past week. The wrestling Indians first fell at Crestwood in a Northeast Iowa Conference dual meet Thursday, December 14 by a 71-8 final result before wrestling to a fifth-place team finish in the 11-team field of the Doug Guilford Tournament hosted by Starmont High School Saturday, December 16.

Falling to a 6-4 dual meet record overall, 1-2 in Northeast Iowa Conference competition, the Indians will now get a bit of a holiday break from competition before returning to action Thursday, January 4 with a home dual against Decorah followed by the Central Elkader Tournament Saturday, January 6.

Waukon bowling teams fall to Decorah in final match before holiday break

In their final competition prior to the holiday break, the Waukon bowling teams suffered a pair of losses at home to Decorah Friday, December 15. The Indian girls team fell to the visiting Vikings by a 1673-2029 final result and the Waukon boys also fell victim to a balanced Decorah effort, 2595-2848.

The Waukon bowling girls enter their holiday break with a 1-3 season record, and the Indian boys have bowled to an even mark of 2-2 so far this season. Following their holiday break, the Indians will return to action Friday, January 5 against North Fayette Valley in West Union.

Sister Therese Marie Hawes, PBVM

Sister Therese Marie Hawes, PBVM, 85, died Friday, December 8, 2017 at Mount Loretto Motherhouse in Dubuque. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 13 at Sacred Heart Chapel, Sisters of the Presentation, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Key West. Leonard Funeral Home, Dubuque assisted with arrangements.

Sister Therese Marie, daughter of John and Ellen (Conway) Hawes, was born Teresa Maria Hawes September 5, 1932 at Wexford. She entered the Sisters of the Presentation September 8, 1949 and professed her perpetual vows June 19, 1955.

Betty Ryder

Betty A. Ryder, 81, of Waukon died Sunday, December 17, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Mark Osterhaus, Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg and Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at St. Pius Cherry Mound Cemetery, rural Harpers Ferry. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, December 20 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3 p.m. scripture service.

Betty Ann Ryder was born August 8, 1936 in Waukon. She was the third child of William and Catherine (Ryan) Ryder. Betty was baptized and confirmed at St. Pius Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry. She grew up in rural Waterville and graduated from Waterville High School in 1954.

Carole Fish

Carole Joan Fish, 75, of Waukon passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. In keeping with Carole's wishes, there will be no funeral services. The family will have graveside services with burial of ashes at a later date at Mt Olivet Cemetery.

Carole was born in Waukon May 21, 1942, the daughter of Harold (Sonny) and Jeanette (Moen) Deeney. She attended St. Patrick Catholic and Waukon schools and married Leroy "Ole" Fish at St. Patrick Church April 11, 1964.

Carole's primary focus was being a housewife and a mother to her four children. She babysat for numerous families over the years in her home. She enjoyed baking, canning, crafting, sewing and finding treasures at garage sales. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed listening to music, with Conway Twitty being one of her favorites. She loved catering to the children she babysat for as well as her grandchildren over the years.

ACSD Board of Directors votes unanimously to close Waterville Elementary

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Directors met on a couple occasions this past week, including a work session Tuesday, December 12 and the board’s regular monthly meeting Monday, December 18. A majority of the larger than normal crowd at the board’s December 18 regular session was there for the board’s first agenda item under New Business, making a decision on the future of Waterville Elementary School. Without further discussion or presentation, the roll-call vote on the matter was unanimous that Waterville Elementary will be closing at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. ACSD Superintendent Dave Herold said the next step in the process for closure of the school will be for the administration, staff and school board to begin planning for the transition and that it would be important to keep everyone up to date and involved in the process.
