Violet I. Stehr, 85, of Lansing passed away at Good Shepherd Hospice House of Manhattan, KS Friday, February 17, 2017. A memorial service was held Saturday, February 25 at St. Peter’s Christian Community Church in New Albin with Rev. William J. Reese officiating. A private graveside service was held in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Violet Iva Zillig was born December 5, 1931 to Peter and Nellie Zillig. Violet was married to Kermit Paul Stehr October 28, 1956 at the Church of Christ in Viroqua, WI. The couple made their home in Lansing.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach-Allamakee County received a $2,000 Working Here Fund grant for a new 4-H food stand proposed for construction at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon. The grant is provided through Farm Credit Services of America’s (FCSAmerica) Working Here Fund. The food stand will offer meal options for fair attendees and will give the 4-H youth an opportunity to communicate with the community and raise funds to support 4-H programs. Christopher “Chris/Teddy” Larson, age 48, of Blue Mounds Township, WI died unexpectedly Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at UW Hospital in Madison, WI. Memorial service was held Saturday, February 18 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mount Horeb, WI with Pastor Jared Parmley officiating. Inurnment will be at Mount Horeb Union Cemetery at a later date.

Christopher was born April 2, 1968 at La Crosse, WI to LaVerne and Jean A. (Kahl) Larson. He was united in marriage to Kasha Lea Krueger February 20, 2009 in Las Vegas, NV. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mount Horeb, WI.

Survivors include his wife, Kasha; their children, Jamiah “JJ” and Iyanna; his dad, LaVerne Larson of Tomahawk, WI; his mother- and father-in-law, Terri and Glenn Krueger of Waukon; his in-laws, Kari (Bill Stoffel) Krueger and family of Campbellsport, WI and Kris (Sarah) Krueger and family of Waukon; and other relatives and friends. His mother, Jean Ann Larson, preceded him in death.
 

Evelyn Folkers, age 105, died February 12, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society, Waukon. Funeral services will be held at a later date.

Evelyn was born September 27, 1911 at Dows, the daughter of Carl and Kristine Nielson Hanson. She married Clyde Pierce September 27, 1932, and he died in June of 1983. She then married John Folkers May 23, 1986, and he died October 2, 2014, also at the age of 105.

Evelyn worked as a bookkeeper for CA Morris Cadillac and Olds, later Tate Cadillac and Olds, in Waterloo for 21 years. She was a member of Trinity American Lutheran Church in Waterloo.

Mona I. Shelton, age 76, of Waukon passed away Saturday, February 18, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 25 at the United Methodist Church in Lansing. A fellowship meal will begin at noon with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. and interment to follow at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon.

Mona was born January 30, 1941 in Lansing. Her parents were Donald and Irene Steiber of Lansing. She attended Lansing schools and worked at Norplex in Postville for many years. She loved her water garden, flowers, hummingbirds and playing with her grandkids.

Mona is survived by her husband, Ray Shelton; three children: Rick Shelton of La Crosse, WI, Ginny (Bob) Schlitter of Waterville and Ron (Kim) Shelton of Waukon; one step-son, Dennis (Rhonda) Shelton; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenny (Judy) Steiber of Lansing; and a sister, Sharon Decker of Waukon.

Phyllis Maxine Peterson-Salim passed Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 12:45 p.m. PST in San Jose, CA.  There will be a memorial in Waukon for her later in the year. For details, please contact Jeff Schon at 563-794-1353.

Phyllis was born in Waukon April 13, 1928 to Ben Peterson (d. 1974) and Violet Echard-Peterson (d. 1984). After graduating from Waukon High School in 1945 she moved to Des Moines to work at Fort Des Moines.  There she met a medical student, Donald Salim (d. 1980), and they were married in 1956. Moving back to his home state of Michigan, they had a son, John Randall (Randy) Salim, in 1966. She is survived by Randy and her two granddaughters, Thara (b. 1998) and Leela (b. 2002) who live in Los Altos Hills, CA.

Rose Marie Smith, age 93, of rural Postville died peacefully at home February 12, 2017. A private family graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 24 at the Postville Cemetery, Postville followed by a Celebration of Life Memorial at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Postville. All are invited to the memorial service at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be offered.

Rose was born March 13, 1923 to Harold and Claire Brewer of Postville. She was raised on their family farm, graduated from Postville High School and briefly taught in country school. She was married to Keith Smith June 15, 1944 and lived on their farm for the rest of her life.

Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon began nuclear cardiac stress testing within its Cardiac Rehab unit in 2008. The convenience of having these nuclear tests offered on a local level has been well received by many in the community since it began.

Nuclear Cardiac Stress Testing offers two different methods, both highly effective in detecting heart disease. These two new forms of nuclear stress testing are called the Exercise Nuclear Stress Test and Lexiscan Nuclear Imaging. Both methods can increase the likelihood of finding heart disease by 20% when compared to traditional treadmill stress tests.

Memorials were recently received by the Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation in memory of Patty (Engrav) Thornton by Elsa Hager, Jerry and Michelle Donahue, Gary Klug and his mother, and Tom and Beth Baxter. Veterans Memorial Hospital will be offering a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for health care providers (those working in health related fields such as physicians, nurses, EMTs, etc.) Monday, March 13, beginning at 5:30 p.m. This “Health Care Professional” CPR class will be held in the Large Conference Room located on the lower level of the hospital.

The cost of the class, for certification or recertification, is the same and all registrants should bring along their own pocket mask. The card received with the course does certify attendants in CPR for two years.
