And then I wrote...

by Dick Schilling, "Editor Emeritus"

... that the Klan is back, in a new guise.

Riots, on university campuses in particular, are being led by the new Klan. The old Ku Klux Klan pretty much disappeared nearly 100 years ago after being revived briefly by an early Hollywood movie. The members were recognized by the steps they took not to be recognized, that is, by wearing white robes and white cone-shaped headdresses.

But lots of local people knew who they were.

The new Klan calls itself “Black Bloc.” The name does not come from the skin color of its members, but rather from the step they have taken to avoid recognition, that is, wearing black clothing and black hooded masks.
But do locals know who they really are?

Word for Word 2/15/17

The apostle John writes: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

In the end there are only 2 religions in the world. One looks to man and his good works for salvation and the other one looks to Jesus and His works for salvation. The one that looks to Jesus and His works for salvation is the Christian religion and the one that looks to man and his good works for salvation is all other religions of the world.

John tells us about the Christian religion, the one that looks to Jesus and His works for salvation.  He says: “Behold, the Lamb of God.”

In the OT God told the Israelites to look at the serpent lifted up on a pole, and when they did they would be cured of leprosy.  And so too John says in our text: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Letter to the Editor: It’s your choice to watch, or not

To the Editor:

There is a video made by a veterans organization for viewing on the web (http://www.salon.com/2017/02/06/votevets-calls-out-president-trump-by-na...) and on television, free for the nation to watch and for your local representatives in Des Moines to watch who want to take away healthcare for seriously wounded veterans for a Bush-Cheney war and people who dodged the draft over and over. And now the party in power wants to take away healthcare, known as Obama Care, for these seriously wounded and PTSD combat veterans.

New Albin wastewater treatment plant progress awaiting Algaewheel data; NAIL looking to become catalyst for this and future projects

by Anne Falken

A year has come and gone since the last report on the New Albin wastewater treatment plant proposal, but the New Albin City Council has been working diligently with Fehr Graham Engineers out of West Union and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to gain a Letter of Consent, which would set out a timeline toward the permit needed to implement a new wastewater treatment system within the community of New Albin.

The City of New Albin wants to incorporate the Algaewheel system, an innovative wastewater treatment system invented at the OneWater Company out of Indianapolis, IN. The present New Albin treatment plant was built in the late 1960s and is currently not compliant with regulations.

Opens State bid Thursday against Charles City opponent

For Waukon wrestling 182-pound senior Blain Swenson, the Saturday, February 11 Class 2A District 1 Tournament at Decorah High School just kept getting better and better, with every wrestler’s ultimate goal of State Tournament qualification being just the beginning.

While Swenson’s first-round win put him in great position to achieve that ultimate goal, making that achievement even better was the fact that he then also won his second match to finish an undefeated day as the District champion and earn automatic State Tournament qualification. To then top it all off, that District championship came by virtue of an 11-5 win by decision over Decorah senior Daniel Ott, who had beaten Swenson in two previous championship matches the past two Saturdays at the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament and Class 2A Sectional 2 Tournament.

Brennan reaches 1,000 career points milestone as Kee basketball boys drop pair

Kee boys basketball senior Danny Brennan proudly displays the poster that indicates the scoring milestone of 1,000 varsity career points he achieved during the Hawks’ final regular season game of this 2016-2017 season played at Coulee Christian High School in West Salem, WI Friday, February 10. Coming into the game, Brennan needed 13 points to reach that scoring height, and his final tally before the halftime break pushed him into that elite Kee boys basketball company that includes just four other players, Ric Zarwell, Pat Heiderscheit, Gabe Schultz and Quinn Schultz. Brennan accomplished that feat in 61 games over the past three seasons, averaging 16.6 points per game during that timeframe. He is pictured above with Kee boys basketball head coach Patrick Sullivan (right) and assistant coach Ben Wagner (left), and the poster was made by his younger sister, sophomore Katie Brennan. Submitted photo.

The Kee boys basketball team brought its regular season to a close this past week, falling in a pair of final non-conference road games but still being able to celebrate something notable. The Hawks suffered a 60-41 loss at Houston, MN Thursday, February 9 and also fell at Coulee Christian by a 68-60 final result Friday, February 10, but it was in that final loss that Kee senior guard Danny Brennan reached the 1,000 career point milestone to etch himself even more firmly among Kee’s basketball elite. The final shot Brennan put through the nylon before the halftime break of Friday’s game placed him in that Kee boys basketball 1,000 point club, a group that includes just four other Hawk hoopsters, Ric Zarwell, Pat Heiderscheit, Gabe Schultz and Quinn Schultz.
