Veterans Memorial Hospital will begin the next Prepared Childbirth Education classes (formerly called Lamaze) Monday, January 8. The classes will continue for two more consecutive Monday evenings, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Large Conference Room.

The Prepared Childbirth Education classes at Veterans Memorial Hospital are offered in three sessions that allow the expectant parents to choose which topics they wish to learn more about. They may choose to attend one, two or all three sessions.  Session 1 covers labor, delivery and the postpartum period following delivery; Session 2 includes relaxation, breathing and pain management; and Session 3 covers infant care. Tours of the OB Department are available with each session as well.

The Waukon High School Class of 1961 will meet this Friday, December 15 at 11:30 a.m. at Gus & Tony’s Pizza and Steakhouse in Waukon. All classmates are invited.
 

Jason and Amy Leidahl of Denver announce the birth of their daughter, Grace Monica Leidahl, born November 28, 2017 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo. She weighed 7 lbs. 4 ozs. and measured 20-1/2 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins brothers, Kyler (6) and Dawson (3).

Grandparents are Steve and Jane Johanningmeier of Waterville and Danny and Carla Leidahl of Decorah. Great-grandparents are Maloy Johanningmeier of Monona and Wayne and Mary Lou Leidahl of Waukon.
 

Brad and Danielle Rose  of Postville announce the birth of their daughter, Lauryn Marie Rose, born November 29, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 7 lbs. 12 ozs. and measured 21 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins siblings, Brynn (5) and Bryce (3).

Grandparents are Bruce and Sharon Kleve of Clermont, Tom and Stephanie Rose of Monona and the late Cathy Rose. Great-grandparents are Myrtle Egan of Waukon, Alvera Kleve of Postville and Dell and Mary Ann Hageman of Ossian.

Autumn and Todd Mitchell of Waukon announce the birth of their daughter, Luna Rae Mitchell, born December 1, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 8 lbs. 7 ozs. and measured 20-1/2 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins sisters, Brooke (4) and Juniper (3).

Ted and Holly Benda of Decorah announce the birth of their daughter, Vivyan Jean Benda, born December 4, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 8 lbs. 12 ozs. and measured 21 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins sisters, Madilyn (7) and Avery (4).

Grandparents are Jim and Cindy Callahan of Lansing and Lawrence and Marsha Benda of Waukon. Margaret Ferring of Lansing is a great-grandparent.

Jessie and Mark Corwin of Waukon announce the birth of their son, Evan Dylan Corwin, born November 16, 2017 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. He weighed 8 lbs. 5 ozs. and measured 20 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins siblings, Halea (11), Chloe (4) and Tye (18 months).

Grandparents are Larry and Dixie Corwin of Lansing and George and Laure Manning of Lansing. Margaret Ferring of Lansing is a great-grandparent.

Voters in the city of Waukon elected a new mayor in the Tuesday, December 5 run-off election.

According to now canvassed results released by the Allamakee County Auditor's Office, those voters elected city government newcomer Pat Stone to the Waukon Mayor's office by a 395-236 final vote count over current Waukon City Council member and one-time multi-term Waukon mayor Dwight Jones.

Stone's margin of victory included an absentee vote spread of 83-49 and an election night tally of 312-187.

The run-off election was necessary after the November 7 City Election did not yield a true winner in an initial five-candidate race for Waukon's mayorship. None of those five candidates in that initial mayor's race received the necessary 50%+1 vote majority, pushing the top two vote-getters, Jones and Stone, into the run-off election.

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Directors met for a nearly two-hour work session in Waterville Thursday evening, December 7 in the Waterville Elementary School library. The main purpose of the work session was to establish a dialogue with parents of Waterville Elementary students and Waterville community members regarding the board's upcoming decision on whether or not the district will keep Waterville Elementary open at the end of this school year. That decision is scheduled to be made at the board's next regular meeting, scheduled for this Monday, December 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Waukon High School Library.
