The next LifeServe Blood Center blood drive will be held Monday, December 11 from 12-5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in south Waukon. The LifeServe Blood Center supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital with its blood and blood products.

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Support Group will not hold a regular meeting in December. The group will begin holding its regular monthly meetings again in January.

Voters in the city of Waukon should be going to the polls Tuesday, December 5 to help determine the town's mayor for the next two years in a special run-off election scheduled following none of the five candidates for Mayor of Waukon in the November 7 City Election receiving the required 50% + 1 vote majority to win the office. Polls for the run-off election will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. December 5, with just one polling location serving all Waukon voters in this particular election, that polling site being located in Room 109 of the Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Waukon Center.
Allamakee County residents and visitors will have a pair of opportunities December 7 to visit the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train within the county's borders, as the lighted holiday spectacle will be stopping in both Lansing and New Albin again this year. Both locations will feature 25-minute performances by scheduled country music performers Terri Clark, Dallas Smith and Kelly Prescott, along with an appearance by Santa Claus. Those visiting the train at its stops are asked to contribute a non-perishable healthy food item or monetary donation, with those food and funding proceeds from the Lansing visit being donated to the Allamakee County Food Shelf and the same from the New Albin stop being donated to The Way Station. Canadian Pacific urges those bringing food items to consult their “healthy donations” link on their website at www.cpr.ca/holiday-train/healthy-donations for donation suggestions.
Supervisors tour bridge projects ... The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors toured a pair of bridge projects within the county with Allamakee County Engineer Brian Ridenour Monday, November 27. The first stop on the tour was the bridge on North Fork Hollow Road pictured above, which replaced a sub-standard narrow steel pony truss bridge at a cost of $444,000. That project is expected to be completed within the next two to three weeks. The group also visited the bridge replacement project on Ferris Mill Road at the border between Allamakee and Winneshiek counties, a shared project between the two Counties. That new bridge, pictured below, replaces the previous structure that had a posted three-ton weight limit and was nearing closure. The bridge replacement cost was $290,000, with the project anticipated to be completed within the next one to two weeks, depending upon the weather. Standard photos by Joe Moses.

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, November 27 to address agenda items including the agreement between the City of Waukon and Allamakee County for construction of the Green Valley Road Bridge replacement project, plat requests and discussion regarding employer of record and insurance. There was no Public Comment.
One more of the beauties of rural northeast Iowa ... Neighbors, friends, family and other area acquaintances and businesses all came together recently to help the family of Richard "Rick" Weber, Jr. after he lost his life in a farming accident earlier this fall. Enough volunteers offered their services for the Webers' fall harvest and an earlier sale of cattle (evident in surrounding photos) that some offers for assistance had to be turned away. Forever grateful.
That’s how the family of the late Richard “Rick” Weber, Jr. feels about the amazing amount of support they received following his untimely passing this past fall.
According to a report from the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office, Rick and his brother, Chris, of Dubuque were performing maintenance on a forage wagon September 7 of this year in a farm field north of Churchtown in rural Lansing when they became entrapped in the equipment. Chris was reported as being seriously injured and was transported by helicopter to La Crosse, WI for treatment, while Rick was reported as having suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.
AMAZING SUPPORT
Neighbor and cousin Wayne Weber said in the days that followed that the family had many offers of help.
Plans are being made for the Eleventh Annual Lighted Holiday Parade in downtown Waukon scheduled for Monday, December 4, beginning at 6 p.m. The event coincides with extended Monday night business hours of Waukon retailers.
The parade will begin at the East Elementary School playground and travel Fifth Street NW south to West Main Street. Turning left onto West Main, the parade entries will venture to the stoplight intersection, where they will then turn south on to Spring Avenue for one block before turning right on to First Avenue SW and heading west up to Sixth Street SW. The entries will then turn right and head north back to the East Elementary playground.
The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Sixth Annual Ringing in the Holidays Promotion. Everyone is invited to play and the rules are simple.
Visit any of the participating merchants between November 1-December 13 to be eligible to sign up for the Sixth Annual Ringing in the Holidays drawing. There is no limit on how many times an individual may enter.
New this year, along with the grand prize of Waukon Chamber Bucks there will be weekly drawings for gift certificates donated by participating businesses. Prizewinners of gift certificates will be drawn each Friday during the promotion period and contacted by the Waukon Chamber. Prizewinners of Waukon Chamber Bucks will be drawn at the Waukon Chamber Office Friday, December 15. Winners will be contacted by the Waukon Chamber of Commerce. The more a customer shops locally, the more times they can be entered in the drawing.
The Good Samaritan Society - Waukon has announced it has earned a five-star rating from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The rating system results are released quarterly and rank healthcare providers in quality of patient care and patient satisfaction. “I applaud the outstanding efforts of our Waukon, Iowa caregivers and staff enabling the center to achieve this prestigious designation,” said Cathy Smikle, administrator. “We are continually seeking to improve our performance in the quality care and services we give our residents to maintain a safe and secure environment for their well-being.”
The Kee High School Post Prom Committee will host Bingo Sunday, December 3 in the Kee High School cafeteria in Lansing. Games will start at 4 p.m., with doors opening at 3:30 p.m.
Participants can bring a food item to be donated to the Allamakee County Food Shelf and play an extra Bingo card free. All players will be eligible for door prizes. Proceeds will be used to fund Post Prom prizes and entertainment in the spring.
